How To Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G on iOS 6.1.3 Using Redsn0w

If you’re an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 4G user and accidentally upgraded to iOS 6.1.3 then the good news is that it is still possible to jailbreak your iOS device using Redsn0w.

In this article we show you how to jailbreak iOS 6.1.3 that was just released using Redsn0w.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G users.
  • Warning: If you depend on Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone, then DO NOT update to iOS 6.1.3.
  • Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 only supports a tethered jailbreak, which means that you need to connect your iPhone to the computer on every reboot (except iPhone 3GS with older bootrom).
  • It is currently not possible to jailbreak iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad mini and iPod Touch 5G. We’ll let you know as soon as there is any update so don’t forget to join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or add us to your circles on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iOS device may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iOS device before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iOS device using iCloud or this one to backup your iOS device using iTunes.
  • Please ensure you are running latest version of iTunes.
  • This method uses an iOS 6.0 jailbreak with the iOS 6.1.3 filesystem, so it could cause some unknown issues.
  • Check out this post to find out the improvements in iOS 6.1.3.

You can follow these step-by-step instructions to jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G on iOS 6.1.3:

Step 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 (Redsn0w 0.9.15 beta 3) from this link and save the application in a folder named “Redsn0w” on your desktop.

Step 2: Download iOS 6.0 firmware file (yes, the trick is to point Redsn0w to the iOS 6.0 firmware file and NOT iOS 6.1.3 firmware file) for your iOS device from the links mentioned below:

  • iPhone (Please ensure you download the correct iOS 6.0 firmware file for your iPhone model. Check this link if you need any help in identifying which iOS firmware file to download for your iPhone model.)
  • iPod touch

Step 2: Connect your device to the computer and double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application. Navigate to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application.

Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 3: Click on Extras button.

Step 4: Then click on the Select IPSW button. Navigate and select the firmware file download in Step 2. It should successfully identify it.

Step 5: Go back to Redsn0w’s main page and click on the Jailbreak button.

Step 6: Redsn0w will now start preparing the jailbreak data.

Step 7: You will now be prompted to select the jailbreak options. Make sure Cydia is selected and click on the Next button to continue. iPhone 3GS users can also select Enable battery percentage option.

Step 8: You will now need to prompted to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

(a) Hold the Power button on your iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device:

Step 9: Your iOS device should reboot now. Please remember to release the Home button.

Step 10: Your iOS device will reboot again and Redsn0w will now begin uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.

Step 11: You will be notified once the jailbreaking process is complete. Click on the Ok and then Quit button to exit the application.

Step 12: The rest of the process will take place on your iOS device, wait for it to complete. Your iOS device will reboot once again (which could take approximately 5 minutes). You will now see the Home screen on your iOS device, but Cydia would still be missing, that’s because you still need to tether boot your iOS device using Redsn0w. So follow the steps mentioned below.

Boot tethered:

Step 13: Launch Redsn0w again.

Step 14: Click on Extras button.

Step 15: Then click on the Select IPSW button. Navigate and select the firmware file downloaded in Step 2.

Step 16: Then click on the Just Boot button.

Step 17: You will now be prompted to plug your iOS device to the computer and switch it OFF again. Follow the instructions and click on the Next button to move to the next screen:

Step 18: You will now need to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

(a) Hold the Power button on your iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device:

Step 19: Redsn0w will recognize the iOS device in DFU mode and apply the limerain exploit (remember to release the Home button). Your iOS device will reboot and a pineapple logo will appear, indicating a tethered boot.

Step 20: Wait for the process to complete, once it is complete, you should see the Lock screen on your iOS device.

That’s it, your iOS device has now been successfully jailbroken and you should see Cydia on the Home screen. If you don’t find it on the Home screen, please don’t panic, search for it using Spotlight.

Note: Since Redsn0w currently supports only a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS with older bootrom, you will need to follow steps 13 to Steps 20, each time you reboot your iPhone or iPod touch to be able to use the jailbreak apps like Cydia.

Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Can’t find Cydia: 

If you can’t find Cydia on your iPhone’s home screen after following steps 1 to 20 then it looks like you’ve used an incorrect iOS 6.0 firmware file. Please ensure you download the correct iOS 6.0 firmware file for your iPhone model. Check this link if you need any help in identifying which iOS firmware file to download for your iPhone model.

2. Unsupported IPSW:

If you get an error message informing you that the IPSW is not supported by this version of Redsn0w, then it means you’ve downloaded iOS 6.1.3 firmware file in step 2 instead of iOS 6.0 firmware file. Please download iOS 6.0 firmware file to jailbreak your iOS device running on iOS 6.1.3.

3. Cydia closes immediately:

If Cydia closes immediately when you try to launch it, it means that you haven’t tethered boot your device. Follow steps 13-20 mentioned above to solve this issue.

      Not really. It’s tethered, just like the 4/3GS/4G jailbreak was for 6.x before evasi0n came along – those exploits are still there, so the older jailbreak still works. The newer chips that are on the iPad and iPhone 4S/5 are what take longer to exploit.

      In the Select IPSW file step, you should select iOS 6 firmware file and not iOS 6.1.3.

      Unfortunately, it would have updated the baseband as well so you won’t be able to unlock it as Ultrasn0w doesn’t support the newer basebands.

      You may want to check out IMEI based unlocking solutions to unlock your device so you don’t have to worry about it going forward.

      You need to install Ultrasn0w but don’t think it is compatible with iOS 6.1.3 yet, you can install it to check.

      I had the same problem. I just renamed the firmware. so instead of iPod4,1_6.0_10A403_Restore, i took out the underscores and named it iPod4,1 6.0 10A403_Restore. I am JB-en again! I wish i had known this little trick before i downloaded 6 different firmwares

          As I’ve mentioned in the tutorial, you need to point Redsn0w to iOS 6.0 firmware file and not iOS 6.1.3. It’s a trick you need to use to use Redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 6.1.3.

    i am trying to jail break the iphone 4 and i went through all of this and at step 12, when it gets to the column saying “please wait….” it stays like that for like ten minutes, then it just reboots (without showing the pineapple logo part) and the phone is just back to normal

    Thanks for all this advice. Can I downgrade to untethered iOS 6.1.2 with a 3GS? I have saved SHSHs (with both redsn0w and TinyUmbrella) and both custom (with iFile) and non-custom Blobs for 6.1.2. No unlocking issues.

      If you have the iPhone 3GS and an untethered jailbreak then it is probably the one with the older bootrom.

    Everytime my phone turns off, I’ll turn it back on, but none of my jailbreaking stuff work. Cydia and Winterboard wont even open at all. I have to “Just Boot” every time. How do I fix it?

      Yes, that is why it is called a tethered jailbreak. There is currently no untethered jailbreak available for iOS 6.1.3. You need to follow steps from 13 to 20 every time you reboot your iPhone to be able to use jailbreak apps.

    Great instructions – but my iPhone is now missing lots of app icons – Phone (?), email icon, and others. Those were default with the iphone, do I have to reload them Cydia or the iTunes App store? I can’t even place a phone call.

            Ideally, they shouldn’t work as only one firmware file will be compatible with your device and the fact that you could follow all the steps indicate the first one was compatible. But you can try your luck and let me know how it goes.

    I have an iPhone 3GS (new Bootrom, but serial number xx134xxx), running ios 5.1.1 and wanted to unlock it (an most preferably update it to ios6). However, I assume with ios 6.1.3 I’m not able to get it unlocked anymore, right (with ios 6.1.2 it should have worked)? It’s currently very confusing with all the different options out there… Thanks for a quick explanation.

    Installation was “easier” by myself “tunned” steps:

    1) iTunes official upgrade and install of iOS 6.1.3
    2) DLed official iOS 6.0 for my iPhone3GS model
    3) manually self complete “deep” DFU (not PWNed (like is over RedSn0w)!)
    4) DL and RUN latest RedSn0w (0.9.15b3)
    5) Choose iOS6.0 IPSW from my-point 2)
    6) RUN JailBreak over RedSn0w
    7) NOTHING ELSE = DONE and 100% WORKING

      It looks like you didn’t click on the Select IPSW button and select the iOS 6 firmware file. You need to do it when you jailbreak and also when you tethered boot your device.

    If you are having trouble in step 12 just plug ur iphone in a different usb hub and if that didnt work please make sure you clicked on ”select ipsw” and you choosed ios 6.0 if that didnt work then you must have an older redsnow version or downloaded the wrong ios 6 ipsw.if your iphone got stuck in the apple logo just hard reset it by pressing home+power buttons until the apple logo dissapears then appears again.for people who are having ”exploit failed” on redsnow please download the latest motherboard drivers and if you are on a laptop make sure your laptop is PLUGED IN THE CHARGER because low usb voltages can interrupt the process and cause errors.

      No, you can’t downgrade baseband.

      You should probably look for the IMEI based unlocking solution to unlock your iPhone. They are quite cheap these days.

      Hardware reset you device by pressing the Home and Sleep/Sleep wake button simultaneously till you see the Apple logo and start the process again.

      That’s because you have an iPhone 3GS with a new bootrom. You should still be able to jailbreak it, but it would be tethered. To unlock your iPhone you need to install Ultrasn0w, though I’m not sure if it is compatible with iOS 6.1.3. You can install it and see if helps.

    ok, so the first trouble shooting tip says that if cydia cannot be located after following the steps to a tee then it must mean that i used the incorrect 6.0 firmware file. I clicked the link to check and make sure that I am choosing the correct file and I am. I still am not getting cydia on my home screen. I restored my phone and tried fresh and still nothing. The jailbreak process goes through fine with no problems and the just boot function also works fine. When my phone comes up to the lock screen I unlock it and do not see cydia. I searched in the spotlight feature and still nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    6.1.3 jailbreak needs to use 6.0 ipsw file or it will not reboot and download to patch. This is why you are not seeing the pineapple. I have gone through this problem for about 3 days now until seeing a youtube video stating to use the 6.0 ipsw file. Good luck!

    Hi all. I had an old Ipod tocuh 4G that I was not using around and give it to my son today for his birthday. It has IOS 4.3.5. From what I have read there was never a untethered jailbreak for this IOS. I tried updating to IOS 6.1.2 using Itunes (Shift+update button and then select ipsw file) but I get error 3194. I believe this happens because apple stopped signing that IOS.
    Is there anything I can do? Do I have to update to IOS 6.1.3 and then follow this guide? Thanks for your help.

    I successfully jailbroke my iphone 4 using 6.0 and Redsn0w 0.9.15b3. After downloading essential files from Cydia and rebooting, I did the Just boot from Redsn0w. I did point it to the 6.0 before rebooting but I get a Exploit failed. FINALLY got it to work but now my CYDIA icon is gone. I have tried rejailbreaking but no good. It either says exploit failed or Cydia is not there. Why did it work the first time and not now? Any help?? Frustrating!!!

      I got it!! I restored my IOS in iTunes to 6.1.3. Had to download via itunes. When I originally updated it was on the phone over air. So I’m assuming my file wasn’t stored on the computer? I restored and rejailbroke and it works great! Not a single problem!

    Need some help here:(
    My iPhone4 (ios 4.3.3, jailbroken already) was hanged whlie opening an app.
    I forced the phone to reboot (home + lock) and now it goes into an infinite loop of rebooting (could only see the white apple and the spinning “flower”, could not go to the screen for me to slide the bar and enter the 4-digit password).
    I have tried many means to back up a very important file from the phone but failed due to a password protection. I have tried programs such as iTools, iFunBox and Gecko iPhone Toolkit (did not use the strong mode).
    I cannot afford to lose that file and that’s way I am not pressing the “Restore iPhone” button in iTunes.
    What should I do now? Should I press the JailBreak button in redsn0w 0.9.15b3 to jailbreak my phone again?

    i successfully jailbreak my iPhone 3GS iOS 6.1.3 with this tutorial
    but when i opened Cydia. it closes immediately.
    i already tethered boot (repeated Step 13-20) but it closes everytime i launch it
    any fix?
    i am doing fresh restore again with itunes and try it again.

    e non x questo problema …ma per il dispositivo in genere…e x il sistema operativo ios …comunque volevo fare questo jailbreak…solo per installare siri …con cydia …ma visto che sono nuovo dell’iphon… ho fatto l’aggiornamento ios 6.1.3 …. come giusto che sia… non sapendo però…che andavo incontro a tutto sto casino!!!!

    I downloaded the IOS restore zip file but it has no IPSW file just dmg files and some folders that look they should have something in it but nothing with IPSW tagged to it, Any special steps for that?

    This does not work like stated above, and even if it did, I’m sure it would not have unlocked the phone seeing that the baseband also updated with IOS 6.13.

    Waste of time!!!

    iphone4 cdma6.1.3 ok so i have redsn0w 0.9.15b3 i downloaded the ipsw iPhone3,26.010A403Restore so i do the tethered jailbreak because it says thats all i can do right now until the untethered 7.0 comes out .. so i did it got through the jailbreaking process i restArted the redsn0w and “manually specify an ipsw as iPhone3,26.010A403Restore then rebooted it …. got through that until the device “iphone” logo came up as the “pineapple” im like SWEET i finally got it after three days of trying to figure this out …. so i sit here waiting … waiting it gets stuck about 5 min later it clears the pinapple and goes straight to the apple logo and boots my normal iphone … no cydia just the same old non jail broken iphone what do i do i tryed to explain everything i could SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!

    Does anyone have an answer to this? Every time i try to get a theme or anything with Cydia it says, (Note: Cannot Locate Package) And i read the solution and it says to install more sources what ones do i install, and what does that mean?

    do i need to reboot everytime I install an app or modification? For instance, I installed a new image for the display of the battery on the lock screen, and it still displays the default battery instead of my new image without rebooting.
