LiveWallpaper Lets You Set Scrolling or Animated Wallpaper on iPhone Home Screen

livewallpaperWe’ve seen a number of jailbreak apps that have put some life into the static wallpapers on iPhone’s Home screen by either adding animations (LivePapers, vWallpaper) or make them scrolling (WS Wallpaper) .

LiveWallpaper is a new jailbreak tweak that is capable of doing both. It allows you to set scrolling wallpaper on the Home screen like you can on Android or add an animated wallpaper.

By default, the jailbreak tweak sets a scrolling wallpaper on your iPhone’s Home screen when you install it from Cydia. The scrolling effect is a lot more prominent if you’ve less number of Home screens pages.

You can set your own wallpaper by launching the LiveWallpaper app from the Home screen. It allows you to select any photo from the Camera roll or Photo stream as the wallpaper.

It opens the image in a split view (which serves as a reference) and gives you the option to customize it. For example: you can make it bigger, smaller or select just a portion of the image as your scrolling wallpaper by simply dragging the outer frame.

Once you’ve selected it, click on the “Done” button. It will process the image and set the image as a scrolling wallpaper on your iPhone’s Home screen. This feature seems to work exactly like the WS Wallpaper jailbreak tweak we’ve covered earlier.

It also allows you to add an animated wallpaper, which you can see in the brief demo below. You need to install the  like the Sakura LiveWallpaper theme from Cydia to add the animated wallpaper. After installing the theme, launch the LiveWallpaper app and tap on the second option. Then tap on the use button at the top right corner to set Falling Sakura as the animated wallpaper. Tap on the Home button to exit the app and you see the animated wallpaper. Update: As reader Itsyaboy has pointed out, this animated wallpaper is also interactive, so you can change the direction of the falling Sakuras by tapping on the screen.

Unfortunately, at the moment the Sakura LiveWallpaper is the only animated wallpaper available for the tweak (note: you may see few more themes that have Live Wallpaper in their names, but they don’t work with the tweak).

You can check out the brief demo of the jailbreak tweak in action below:

While Live Wallpaper is great if you want to set a scrolling wallpaper, LivePapers still seems like the best option if you want to add a animated wallpaper.

LiveWallpaper by DDT is available for free on Cydia. You can click on the download link below if you’re on a jailbroken iOS device to install LiveWallpaper.

…I felt obligated to make this comment

I’m very sure you felt very obligated. No worries. I have an iPhone 5 and an upgrade. Sweet combo ehh? Yeah. I have an upgrade with 3 phones to choose from. HTC One, iPhone 6, and Galaxy s4. The day of the iPhone announcement will decide my fate. HTC one, looks very beast, Galaxy s4 is feature packed, iPhone 6 unknown ;) I will wait and see before I choose. My iPhone 5 is good enough to hold me off for a few more months. I felt obligated to make this comment.

      • Itsyaboy

Yea just confirmed it is interactive i downloaded the moonlight pond them for the godesk and it works with livewallpaper i guess its the same author, interactive as in you can touch the wallpaper like pop bubbles, move things around etc etc like the angry droid for the android when you tap him he does a back flip and in this case with the frog from the moonlight theme i tap the leaf that i want the frog to jump to

Hmm, it doesn’t seem to be a theme for LiveWallpaper though and it doesn’t seem to be compatible with iOS 6. Unable to purchase it on the iPod touch 5G.

          • Itsyaboy

Yea the app is not compatible had to download it from xsellize after you download you have to copy the folder and the wallpaper from library/aplication support then remove both the app and wallpaper in cydia then go back to ifile and put the folder plus wallpaper back in its place

          • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Huh! Then it doesn’t belong here.

          • Itsyaboy

It was for the purpose of knowing if interactive wallpapers are compatible since they are i just thought it should be mentioned the steps i gave are simply for you go varify

          • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

            Cool!

          • Itsyaboy

One last thing, it does also mention interactive in the app description

          • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Actually, you’re right, just checked it and the Falling Sakura wallpaper is also interactive. I’ve updated the post. Thanks for pointing it out, completely missed it.

          • Itsyaboy

No problem, just hoping with the word out.. more interactive papers can get created

          • Itsyaboy

Or i can send you the files and you can try it out that way… Hopefully now devs can import interactive wallpaper from the android market thats one of the best features the ios is missing i would do it myself if i knew how

Anyone know if any of the scrolling wallpaper tweaks work with any of the icon arrangement tweaks (such as Gridlock)?

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Yeah, it works. I had Gridlock installed when I did the demo of the tweak.

      • chadster

        Thanks! That’s awesome

  • Hautis

Looks like there is a slight problem; locking and then unlocking the device makes the background lose it’s scrolling effect. Anyone else had this problem?

  • Jack Bond

It only allows for 2 frames, and if you have enough pages, it runs out of space and scrolls away, leaving the default background.

  • Steven

anyone else get an error when trying to use a picture from your camera roll? i get an error that starts with : “image writes to path /var/mobile/documents/livewallpaper@2x.png fail. error info: ” etc etc and says operation couldnt be completed. any help would be appreciated !

What are you talking about? nothing about piracy in my post… Not even a hint. We were talking about phones, had nothing to do with whatever the blog was talking about.

Oops that was for another comment!
