Apple launches new 16GB iPod touch with Retina Display, A5 chip, FaceTime HD for $229, lacks rear camera

Apple has just launched the 16GB model of the 5th generation iPod touch.

When Apple launched the 5th generation iPod touch last September, it was available in 32GB and 64GB models for $299 and $399, and continued to offer 16GB and 32GB models of the 4th generation iPod touch for $199 and $229 respectively.

The 16GB model of the 5th generation iPod touch is available for $229. Apple has also discontinued the 4th generation iPod touch, making the 16GB iPod touch 5G the new entry level iPod touch.

It features a 4-inch Retina Display, A5 processor, FaceTime HD camera and the same ultraslim design (6.1 mm) as the 32GB and 64GB models. Interestingly, there are some differences between the 16GB model that has been launched today and 32GB and 64GB models.

The biggest difference is that the 16GB model does not come with rear facing iSight camera. This seems to have made it marginally lighter. The 16GB model weighs 3.04 ounces (86 grams) compared to 32GB and 64GB models, which weigh 3.10 ounces (88 grams). It also comes in just one color. Based on the images on Apple’s website, it looks like the back panel is white in color, whereas the front panel is black. It also does not have the “loop” lanyard hook.

Could this mean a cheaper iPhone too?

    • iPhoneHacks

What do you mean cheaper iPhone?

      • tks

An iPhone that costs less i suppose…

        • iPhoneHacks

Without 3G it can’t be called the cheaper iPhone.

          • RandomGamer342

I think he means that there’s a real possibility of a cheaper iphone now

          • iPhoneHacks

Not sure how it gives any clues to a cheaper iPhone.

          • Just saying

Makes sense to me :/ and also makes sense because your website has posted about a cheap iphone many of times..

          • iPhoneHacks

It is very likely that Apple will launch a cheaper iPhone, but not sure how the launch of the 16GB model gives us any clue.

“….the 16GB model does not come with rear facing iSight camera.”

At the price point Apple is setting for this version, it seem to a real rip off imo.

“When Apple launched the 5th generation iPod touch last September, it was available in 32GB and 64GB models for $299 and $399…”

It seems to that the 16GB should priced even lower than $199, just it does include the camera. The price should be arould $150, because it comes with 50% less storage than the $299 32GB minus the camera. Instead, Apple is charging more for this product, which offers less than the other two options. Am I missing something?

Agreed, the lack of a rear camera at that price point does come as a surprise.

Apple should have ideally priced it at $199. $150 would be too low as that would cannabalise iPod nano sales, which is available for $149.

I would like to agree with you, but Apple has chosen not follow the existing pricing scheme for this particular product line. That being, “5th generation iPod touch last September, it was available in 32GB and 64GB models for $299 and $399…” With only a 50% drop in storage an, Apple offers a reduction in price of a hundred dollars. Now, the 16GB model only come with a $70 price reduction, plus NO camera. A clear price grouching from the consumers’ stand point imo. Shame on Apple. :(

I see it as Apple know what there doing… n thats to screw the customer.. if you are a few $ short and you know you cant get the rest then you have to buy the cheap version thats expensive.. screw you apple..

Wow that’s a huge downgrade!!! Starting to not like apple ever since Steve past away they have been making bad decisions.

To be honest I kinda like this new model :) Though it is kinda stupid that apple did not add a rear camera :( well atleast i have my Nokia lumia which had the exact same amount megapixels! If I wanna post a pic that needs a back camera I can just use my phone ^^ But overall I think it’s great and I can’t wait to try one out! :)
