Smartwatch+ brings weather, calendar, iPhone battery status and tons more functionality to Pebble smartwatch

When Pebble smartwatch hit Kickstarter, I was extremely excited and immediately backed the project. However, when it arrived couple of months, I was a little underwhelmed as it did not offer a lot of functionality.

However, tweaks like BTNotificationEnabler and RunKeeper app that added support for the Pebble smartwatch last week are slowly unlocking the potential of the smartwatch.

Recently, two new jailbreak tweaks, Smartwatch+ and PebbleSiri have been released on Cydia that add tons of functionality to Pebble.

Smartwatch+ brings additional information to the Pebble smartwatch via your iPhone such as weather, your iPhone’s battery status, stocks, Bitcoin prices, upcoming calendar appointments, your current GPS location along with distance travelled and your current speed.

It also allows you launch the Camera app and take pictures on your iPhone and adjust your iPhone’s volume using Pebble. When you install Smartwatch+, it also installs the PebbleSiri tweak, which allows you to launch Siri using Pebble.

Robert Hesse, the developer of Smartwatch+ has used a hack that brings these new features through Pebble’s Music app due to the current limitations of the SDK. Pressing the rewind button on Pebble in the Music app allows you to flick through watch screens that display the weather, iPhone’s battery status, stocks, Bitcoin prices, upcoming calendar appointments, your current GPS location with speed.

After installing the tweak, you can configure the tweak via the Smartwatch+ app installed on the Home screen. Currently you can enable or disable the following 9 watch screens:

  1. Status: shows weather information and iPhone battery status
  2. Calendar: shows next appointment with time/date and location
  3. Bitcoin: shows the current bitcoin exchange rate from mtgox
  4. Stocks: shows current stock price of a selected stock symbol
  5. GPS: shows current location (either as lat/lon or street name), altitude or distance travelled, and current speed
  6. Music: starts/stops the regular iPod music playback
  7. Volume: control your iPhone’s playback volume
  8. Camera: launch the built-in iPhone camera and take a picture
  9. Siri: launch Siri from your watch

To enable or disable a watch screen, all you need to do is tap on the Edit button and drag and drop the screens under Enable Watch screens or Disabled Watch Screen sections.

You can configure some additional settings for some of the watch screens such as Status, Stocks and GPS. For example: you can configure the location, the temperature unit (Celsius/Fahrenheit) and the update interval in the Status watch screen. You can configure the stocks and the update interval in the Stocks watch screen. You can also configure whether you want the Street name and the distance travelled to be displayed in the GPS watch screen. You can also configure the update frequency. Not surprisingly, I observed a significant drain on battery life with the GPS watch screen enabled, so you may want to adjust the update frequency to avoid impacting your iPhone’s battery life.

Hesse has mentioned that he will add more watch screens in the future and offer the functionality via a separate app when Pebble extends its SDK.

Smartwatch+ works exactly as advertised. It is available on Cydia for $3.99.

It is great to see Cydia developers developing tweaks for the Pebble smartwatch to add more functionality.

Let me know what you think of the tweak in the comments.
