Users able to install iOS 7 beta 2 without developer account

When Apple released iOS 7 beta 1 for developers of its iOS Developer program couple of weeks back, we had reported that regular users were able to install iOS 7 beta on their devices without a developer account i.e. without registering the UDID of their device.

It looks like it is also possible to install iOS 7 beta 2 that seeded yesterday without a developer account. A number of readers have confirmed that they have been able to install iOS 7 beta 2 by following these steps.

  • Download the correct .ipsw file for your device
  • Connect your phone to iTunes and (Alt/Option for mac, or Shift for Windows) on the Update button instead the restore button.

The trick is to use the Update option rather than the Restore option. We’ve received information that this also works on the iPad. Apple seeded the iOS 7 beta for the iPad and iPad mini for the first time yesterday.

Some of the readers who had installed iOS 7 beta 1 without the developer account have also confirmed that they have been able to upgrade to iOS 7 beta 2 by installing the over-the-air update without any issue.

Many of you may want to try this trick to check out what iOS 7 looks like on your iOS devices, but please proceed with caution. They are a number of reasons regular users should not install the beta versions of iOS 7.

I never thought Apple would do anything about this issue if it weren’t for the lawsuit. How does a parent hand over their Apple ID details and play ignorance when their kid cleans out their credit card account?

    • Andrew

      Because people are stupid.

    • drumrobot

      Wrong article?

  • Stan

I’m not sure why by using the restore and update through iTunes and through OTA, the progress bar seems to be stuck with the Apple Logo.

  • Flávio Araújo

I used over-the-airmethod and worked fine

  • El

I used OTA update on iphone5 and it worked

  • Tim

I can confirm it works. I tried it on my iPad 3, but I agree I won’t install it on my main device just yet.

it seems not possible to update iphone 4s 6.1.3 to ios7 beta 2 this way? tried it, got stuck…

    • David

Not true, I did it yesterday without a single problem

      • gerritakajey

        ok, i’ll try again…

        • David

Make sure to press alt/option on Check for update and NOT restore. If you have any problems put it into dfu mode and alt/option restore back to a 6.1.3 ispw and backup.

          • gerritakajey

Hey, it worked! Thanks! Can a restore a backup from my 6.1.3?

          • David

I kept all my info from my 6.1.3 backup, yes. But if you restore back to 6.1.3 you will not be able to use any of the backups taken from 7.0, therefore losing all of that info

this is happening to me too, did you ever figure out a way to fix it?

  • Dennis Wells

From what I’ve heard, you can install without “Developer” account, but “Messages” and any other apps that require “activation” won’t work..

  • Sako

I registered my UDID ( $8 ) and updated to ios 7 beta 2. Works great on my iphone 5. I had free version of ios 7 and my iphone was stuck with apple logo, i had to downgrade 6.1.4 and do it again.
