Users able to install iOS 7 beta without developer account

ios-7-announcement

Few hours back Apple seeded the first beta version of iOS 7 to developers of the iOS Developer program.

As we mentioned earlier, you need to be a developer (i.e. have your device’s UDID registered with a developer account) to be able to install the iOS 7 beta.

However, users on reddit are reporting that they have been able to update their iPhones to iOS 7 beta without having their iPhone’s UDID registered with a developer account.

reddit user 000MIX explains how he managed to install iOS 7 beta on his iPhone 5:

  1. Download the correct .ipsw file for your device
  2. connect your phone to iTunes and (Alt/Option for mac, or Shift for Windows) on the Update button instead the restore button.

So the trick is to use the Update option rather than the Restore option. It is not clear if this works on other iOS devices as well (though iOS 7 beta is not yet available for the iPad).

While we understand that many of you may want to try this trick to check out what iOS 7 looks like, please proceed with caution as it is the first beta so would be buggy, and users are also reporting compatibility issues with some of the apps.

If you do give it a shot, let us know how it goes in the comments.

Imdzl have all the software packages. Google imdzl

  • iphoto

    • FUCCBOI

      dont restore, check for update

      • RP

how do you select the option to update if you can done a restore and are stuck on the activation screen?

        • ah

same thing happens with me i am stuck

          • Mark

If you’re stuck, enter DFU mode while connected to iTunes:

1 – Power the iOS device down completely.

2 – When it’s powered down, press and hold the power button.

3 – After 3 seconds, press and hold the home button without releasing the power button.

4 – After 10 seconds, release the power button without releasing the home button.

iTunes will display a message that it’s detected a device in restore mode and it’ll allow you to “downgrade” to the latest public release of iOS: 6.1.4.

      • Ryann

ios7 too sluggish, app crashes, and a battery sucker on my 4s. Im way happy to roll it back to 6.1.3. I guess i have to wait til their official relase.

    • Jason Bourne

Skype, eBay, Podcasts (official Apple one).

    • Hulk

      Yes you can

      So is it worked?

      • Steve

Works fine, as stated a little slow but not at all unuseable
        I love it

  • Tom Gouder

Downloading the file now. Apparently, it’s a DMG file, not like the usual IPSW files that Apple has traditionally stored their software in.

    • ios7

extract it it is a IPSW file………

      • asdf

        what??

        • Jason Bourne

What Tom said makes perfect sense. No idea why you responded with “what??” lawl.

          • Ryan Nelson

            7Zip works fine to extract

  • Wahizul

Is it works? I dont mind losing my jailbreak if its really work. If it dont work, i dont want to lose my jailbreak by installing 6.1.4

  • RandomGamer342

Finding a proper link to the beta wasn’t the easiest thing to do, ended up finding a torrent for it. Update was pain free, shift+click update and let it lay there for some minutes and it was done and working.

The interface is interesting, and certainly flat, but i like it. The icons look a lot better live than on a screenshot, that’s for sure. The control panel is better than sbsettings or any android control panel i’ve seen, and it’s a godsend

There’s still a lot to get used to and a couple of bugs, though. Gestures are nice, but they’re inconsistent and missing from many areas i’d expect them. I’m really not used to the music controls in the control center, but it’s better when i remember it. Multitasking looks nice, and i might begin finally using it. It lags like hell with safari and this disqus comment bar, though.

Most apps will probably use the legacy keyboard, but i haven’t found any major incompatibilities. Word wrapping is wrong in some areas, album artwork and cached images break often, but it’s surprisingly good for a beta

My only issue is: There is STILL NO WAY TO UNLOCK THE SIM WITHOUT DIALLING A FAKE NUMBER ARGH

    • rasmushed

What do you mean dialing a fake number? Does the sim lock when in beta?

      • RandomGamer342

Oh no, it’s nothing serious, it’s just that it didn’t prompt me to type in the PIN number so i tried calling a number to get the prompt

    • TheJew

would you perhaps be able to put the link where you downloaded it from>

  • Chillaxer1990

The best way ist to restore the Idevice first without playing the backup on the idevice. Its better because you have a clean IOS and it will work…know connect the Idevice to the Computer push the option button if you are on mac/ the shift button if you are on windows and click on update and select the IOS 7 firmware for you Idevice which you downloaded for it.

I do it with every beta version since ios 6 beta 1 and it works perfectly. But if they release a new beta version, your Idevice gets locked beacuse your UDID is not registrated. Then you need to download the new beta and do the same again. And you can downgrade. I do it several times since ios 6 beta 1. You need to connect you Iphone to the Computer and push the option button if you are on MAC/ the shift button if you are on windows and click on update.

On Windows the firmware is in the following path located:

    C:UserYOUR-WINDOWS-USERNAMEAppDataRoamingApple ComputeriTunesiPhone Software Updates

For MAC: i dont know it, baceause i don’t have a MAC. But google cam tell you where can you find the firmware on MAC

Know you wait and you are back on IOS 6

I Hope i could help you all a little bit and sry for my bad englisch :P

    • Meio Dia

      Is it really works?

      • Chillaxer58

It works. I tested it with my iphone 5 and for the first beta it is very stable :)

  • Steve

Works ok on a 4, jut a little sluggish

  • Steve

cant get Airdrop to work, any ideas?

  • Thomas Gouder

It’s perfect. I installed it without any hassles by downloading the DMG file and extracting it to retireve the IPSW to which I updated my phone. One thing I noticed is that the iPod 4G is not supported by the iOS 7, and there is little evidence stating it will be supported when the OS officially launches.

    • http://www.twitter.com/Namra297 Namra

plz plz tell from where u downloaded plzzzz

      • Tom Gouder

Downloaded from the Apple Developer Centre. You need a Developer License though..

        • JabbaTech

Sorry. But explain to me why you’re trying to install it in this way when if you have a dev licence? I’m puzzled.

          • Tom Gouder

The method for installing both an officially downloaded IPSW, and a non-officially downloaded IPSW is the same. It’s just the source of your download that’s different.

  • brittosa

For ppl getting incompatablity errors, make sure you have the correct file for your phone model. For example, iPhone5,1_7.0_11A4372q_Restore.ipsw is for iPhone 5 Model:A1428 and iPhone5,2_7.0_11A4372q_Restore.ipsw is for iPhone 5 Model:A1429.

  • Jason7

really good but i am worried a bit for the ability of future updates or if i need to go
to apple store with my phone because i am still under warranty.

  • rauf

not connected to the update server. iphone 4s, correct firmware any idea please

  • http://www.twitter.com/Namra297 Namra

What if we’re not able to perform the same trick for future beta den my iphone will be rendered useless i heard so I’m scared so plz anyone say me what to do when this beta expires n den i will also update like this thx :)

    • Grayson

I have my iphone 5 running beta 1, but if ur not a dev, then ur udid will not be registered, which will not let u do anything until iOS 7 golden master is availabl I would notion not recommend doing it without dev account

  • Faceroll

Works with iPhone 4S, restored to 6.1.4, updated to 7.0 by shift-clicking the “Check for Updates” button.

  • er_one

hope the final version will have dark theme, it will be win win solution both for black and white iphone

  • Matt

My only worry would be that when beta 2 is released it may then require an authentication from a registered app,e developer. So maybe those of you that have iOS 7 free now will have to pay for a developers account when that beta expires? Just a thought.

I know apple did away with UDID authentication in iOS 6 so could that be why the iOS 7 ipsw is working now?

I’m tempted to upgrade but just a little worried that if I do the beta will expire and I won’t be able to again. What are your guys thoughts?

  • nay

    stuck

We’re unable to complete your activation.

This device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program. If you are a member of the Program, please register your device in the iPhone Developer Program Portal.

    now what to do……..

    • Drea

Same thing happened to me, I nearly had a panic attack!
Luckily after a little bit of searching I found these basic instructions

1st, find and download iOS 6.1.3 or 6.1.4 depending on if you have an iPhone 5 or 4S and below.

Turn off your phone, connect to iTunes

Hold the home button and lock button at the same time until a window comes up that says your phone is in restore mode.

      Click OK

Option/ALT click the restore button on iTunes and select the firmware that you had downloaded previously

Your phone will be restored back to iOS 6

Of course you’ve probably already found out how to restore back to iOS 6 but just in case :) I hope it solved your issue.

  • Mike Ditka

Did this with mine, its working perfectly

  • Dev

Why bother for a few weeks worth, once beta2 comes, then all non-devs upgrades are rendered expired and useless, than have to downgrade… and guess what…your IOS7backup/settings becomes unportable back to IOS6… Unless of course you don’t care.

    • carigis

lol.. they are not going to expire. non dev upgrades worked for the entire 6.0 beta line… and likely will the entire 7.0 line as well…

  • tskwierc

Looks pretty good kinda buggy with folders and multi task switcher though. The lock screen is cool with the animated wallpaper and you can slide anywhere on the screen not just at the bottom. The animation they use on the swipe to move/trash in mail looks choppy atm and the swipe from the left edge for inbox and messages as well. Surprised they did not update Ibooks app to a flat look as well, but maybe they will do this later. Used my daughters Ipod touch 5. Got the newness out of my system now I can patiently wait for an official release for my phone and jailbreak as well.

  • Felipe

    it works on unlocked iphones?

  • tskwierc

Don’t think it was mentioned but I was wondering what happened to spotlight since it was missing and I cam across it by accident you simply pull anywhere on springboard down (below status bar since this opens notification center) and it appears… to dismiss swipe back up or press home button.

    • Ashton

Pull down from the centre of the screen mate

  • Andrew Hahn

Whats the exact process? I have an iPod Touch 5Th generation 64GB running iOS 6.1.3 Ive tried all the ways I know to restore and/r update to the iOS and it will NOT let me. How did you guys do it?

    • Michael Ramirez

      mac or pc ?

    • Jason Bourne

Try upgrading to 6.1.4 first, then upgrading again to 7.0.

  • Glenn R.

It works great! Typing this from iOS 7 with no developer account ;)

  • Michael Ramirez

i just recently installed it in my ip4, noticed some bugs but works great, yes the dock looks horrible with a gray background but other than that everything is great. remember guys don’t click on restore.

  • Golf pro

I did update to iOS 7, I didn’t like and downgrade to 6.13, then I installed iOS 7 again, it does drain your battery, apps can’t be open, it losses sensibility. Hope they fix a lot of issues

  • Luiz Doyle

IT WORKS! UHUL! iOS7 on my iPhone 4 GSM!

  • Greg

Does anyone know WHY this is working? Apple is usually so tight and strict, this shouldn’t actually be working…

    • Steve

      Good point.

  • John Austin

The trick for this seems to be make SURE you option-click(mac) shift-click(PC) on UPDATE, NOT restore. If you do a restore it will say that your phone isn’t registered on the developer network. IF something happens, restore back to 6.1.4 and try again. I’ve done this on 2 iPhone 4′s and 2 iPhone 5′s

    • harriscauler

If I do click restore, and it says I’m not a dev (paid someone, but idk if it went through yet), will DFU mode definitely allow me to get back out?

      • John Austin

on my iPhone 4, It didn’t take the first time, so put it into DFU mode, restore’d 6.1.4 and once that finished tried it again. Takes just a bit so don’t be quick to unplug or stop the process. Took almost 5 minutes to get movement on the progress bar on the phone

  • Omar Aziz

    Hello guys,
I have updated to iOS 7 on my iPhone 5.
But when it booted it was stuck to the iTunes activation screen ( the new iOS 7 one).
Now I just wanna use the phone any way possible. It is not letting me downgrade to 6.1.4, and it is also not letting me do a new installation of the iOS 7.
    It just keeps saying:
“The iPhone could not be restored. It is not eligible for the requested build”
I also tried doing that while on DFU mode.
I would appreciate your help guys.

  • John Paulser

Email me j.paulser@outlook.com if you need UDID registration. And I will register you in a few minutes so you can use iOS7 100% legally. Providing registration proof for those who want. Just email UDID and I will get back to you in minutes!

    • Mauro

How does it work? not put at risk my iphone sharing my UDID?

      • John Paulser

Hi, you don’t put your iPhone in any risk by sharing it to only me or other registering it. It is just controlling if you are verified to use the beta versions.

  • Berik

Works on iphone 4s. No problems.

  • John Paulser

Send me a email at j.paulser@outlook.com including UDID and I will fix in a few minutes.

  • John Paulser

I can make you UDID registered for only 8USD. Email j.paulser@outlook.com and I will help you in minutes.

  • GameHrd

it worked, but windows firewall has to be turned off…plus, it is super buggy. Also, updating to iOS 7 beta 1 means that when the beta 1 expires, you will have to update to beta 2 or else it doesn’t work, so if you cannot install beta 2 without a developer account, you are in trouble

  • RJ

please my iphone is stuck and does not responding to dfu or enything its just stuck on the screen with the “you r not a developer…”
    what to do??????????

    • Junior C

try putting it in DFU mode while plugged into iTunes

  • Tristan

So my brother hit restore and not update his phone is now stuck in the can not active screen and cant dfu cause his home button does not work can anyone help me please

    • shakerftw

Repair homebutton first.. then do a DFU and restore..

  • Dan

I get error 3194 when I do it. Hmmm

  • Alex

If you are looking for the iOS7

Here it is is on Spanish but with Subtitles in English

    /watch?v=3-gueSdlPFw

    WITHOUT DEVELOPER :D

  • David

Worked for me on a iphone 4s. Make sure you are updated to newest software and not jailbroken for a smoother transition. Paid 8$ for the UDID on imdzl and it worked fine.

  • BALTRL

Major bugs with the podcast app. Sucks cause I use that app a lot.

  • blah

I did it on my 4s and it works but its very laggy…

  • mkimid

So many bugs, please do not hurry to update. And, very very slow on iPhone 5

  • joseph

it worked!!! I now have ios 7 installed in my iphone 5, but I noticed the animations made it sluggish, but overall it’s so good, except for the icons.. but great new features, making it easy to use,

  • TiPan

once you do this there is no going back right?

    • sep

there is, put your phone in dfu mode, andrestore to 6.1.4 for ip5 or 6.1.3 for iphone 4s

  • Jaeger101

I want to do this but afraid I won’t be able to call or text. Has anyone done these with ios7

    • Yogs_Vzla

so far everything works correctly except Push notifications, iMessage and FaceTime

  • Beno Novak

I really love the whole new look they did. But does anyone know if it uses more cellular data?

  • Tedy

When I click Shift+Ceck for updade and i select .ipsw file says FIRMWARE NOT COMPATIBILE. What to do ??? Please, help me !!

    • Panty Sniffer.

Download a compatible version to your model. Duh.

  • Jeffery Egbert

This method appears to break facetime and iMessage. Only a restore, which requires a registered UUID, works correctly if you care about those.

  • Charles Kramer

It works good so far. Only problem I’ve encountered so far is that when using the automatic app update feature, it tends to keep the app waiting instead of updating, so you manually have to go to the App Store. Another one would be that when listening to music and you lock your phone, it doesn’t update the album art quickly, so you can be looking at album art from a couple songs ago. Not major problems, can easily be fixed. Other than that, it works great for my phone. iPhone 5 by the way.

  • John Morgan Evans

Anyone else experiencing issues with iMessage, Push notifications and their music library? Please advise – model 4S AT&T

    • Yogs_Vzla

Hi John, I have the same issue, and I have an AT&T iPhone 5.. For what I have found the only way to get push notification, iMessage and FaceTime to work is basically re-activate the iPhone but if you install the iOS 7 beta using the update option most likely is because you don’t have a developer account, and this solution won’t work… ahve you found a way to solve it??

  • Farra Munna Harun

installed…. the first time it was so hard to enter the home screen so i need to press volume up button. it works…. but…next issues… my fon just keep heating up… and battery level is decreasing so fast…. any tips? thanks guys

    • SoulOfAton

I had similar issues, the only things that seemed to help at all was to do a reboot. Other than that, the various battery savers are always an option. Turn off push notifications, blah blah…google “ways to extend iphone battery life” or something. Things like this are to be anticipated though, it’s only a beta. You should only invest in installing the beta if you are developer, it’s hardly worth the risks any other way. You can downgrade if you’ve saved your blobs and know how to stitch an ipsw. maybe. havent tried it yet, you might be out of luck until September when it actually gets released, and it still may have issues due to the manner and conditions it was installed. Really isnt worth the risk if you arent developing…wait for the stable version. It wont kill you to live with ios 6.x.x for a few months…but in the end it’s always Apple’s fault, don’t worry.

  • BALTRL

I’ll say that so far it doesn’t interact AT ALL with podcast app (had to download the free version of RSSRaido, limited to three podcast before in app purchase) and it doesn’t do well with findmyiphone (crashes), I had to download Lookout as substitute in the meanwhile (limited to only 2 devices).

In general I LOVE the control center (about time apple). And I hate that the new search bar (swiping from middle of home screen down) is limited to only searching WITHIN the iphone (remember the older one let you search Wiki and Google too, I hope it’s fixed in next beta).

One thing I found was that the old way of deleting each individual message in imessage has been eliminated. I don’t know if any of you have figured this out yet. But if you hold any of the messages you want to delete a copy/more button pops up and the more allows you to delete messages (individual or multiples).

Anyone else figure out anything else?

    • SoulOfAton

sure did, made a post about it.

“-The control panel brightness setting doesn’t work if you have auto-brightness on. (not necessarily a bug, but good to know if you’re having trouble with it)

-When using the Shazam app, the red top bar notification that usually appears for a second or two after you close the app out stays until, I found, you open and close a different app.

-Siri’s suggested phrases for application launch are formatted wrong, the top and bottom portions of the text are cut off. (not a big deal, you may never even see these suggestions, they aren’t the main ones. Still, looks unprofessional nonetheless)

-The springboard crashes periodically, this will no doubt be fixed in the September release though.

-Something that i’ve noticed is that iOs 7 seems to use battery life at a quite alarming rate, my device is constantly hot and losing more charge than it should.

It’s almost uncomfortable to hold at times it gets so hot, even if all apps are closed out in the backgrounder, the temperature is still significantly higher than it should be. This is no small issue, if it’s a firmware issue, which it seems to be, then Apple will no doubt find a solution for this before the final release. Or at least in 7.0.1.

-the dynamic background feature is nice, too bad there are only two to choose from??

-Another major flaw that Apple will undoubtedly correct is the organization feature of the apps within the folders. The organization of apps while in a folder from one page to another is not possible. If you want something that’s on the second page to be in the first, you have to pull it out of the folder and then drop it back in. If you want something on the second page, you’re pretty much out of luck unless you want to take some other apps and use them as fillers until you’ve enough space so that the app you want the second page overflows into it. Not very efficient.

All in all, an excellent system. (especially considering it’s only a beta, fairly well rounded.)

That’s all I’ve noticed so far, I’ll continue to be on the look out for bugs and possible improvements. If you find one before I do, i implore you to share it with me, and i would be obliged to do the same.

      e-mail me at: soulofaton@gmail.com

you should email me if you find anything else, include as much detail as possible, i’m attempting to create a comprehensive list of issues so that i can work on debugging as many as i can while helping other developers to get a better grasp of what still needs to be accomplished as far as iOS 7 goes, priority wise.

Worked for me too… Downloaded the iphone 5 ios 7.0 dmg and updated with itunes. Working like a charm!!! HUHUUUUUUUU ;-)

  • Tawil

What happens if you hold alt+restore and choose the iOS 7 file?

  • Tawil

What happens is you click restore instead of update?

  • Moses Altmann

So here’s what I did: First, I downloaded the iOS 7 ipsw for my iPod touch 5G, hitting the shift+restore in itunes, and going through the whole process. When I booted up my iPod, it said that I wasn’t a registered dev (something like that) and I couldnt do ANYTHING, not even restore to iOS 6 from itunes. FAIL!!! But then I re-read the post, and realized that I should have hit shift+UPDATE. I had to restore through redsn0w, and then go through the correct process. So far, iOS 7 is awesome. Can’t wait for the final release…

    • Gio

DUDE SAME PROBLEM!! HOW CAN I REVERT?!?! T.T

      • Shaker ftw

HE EXPLAINED IT IN THAT POST DUMB :D

    • Lissette

Cam u explain more what you did I have the same problem

  • Johnson

Dont you Think Apple will fix this, and then you will be stock with beta 1 until the beta dies, unless you downgrade, because beta 2 probably will require registration both ways ?

Maybe they send out a fixed ipsw and starts update OTA from that point.

I have iOS 7 installed and running and I have to say, its a very impressive and innovative design and interface, the only thing i’m displeased with is the automatic update feature, that’s definitely a no-go. I had it installed since last night, and here are a few of the things that i have noticed that should probably be brought to light, if they haven’t been already, and and corrected before the actual release in September.

    You may have noticed:

-The control panel brightness setting doesn’t work if you have auto-brightness on.

If you find one before I do, i implore you to share it with me, and i would obliged to do the same.

what will happen when beta 2 comes out and that version doesn’t allow you to just alt-click update???

  • kyle

This worked great for me and my iphone 5…. It failed (locked up in activation mode) when i tried to ‘restore’. So make sure you Alt-click the UPDATE or “CHECK FOR UPDATE” button like the post talks about.

i have installed it. without a developer account.. the critical part is if your device is iphone 5, before you update to ios 7, your device must be freshly restored from 6.1.4, dont set it up or you will fail installing ios 7.. thats about it. less than five minutes and already youre running ios 7

Is anybody having a problem with sync? I have iPhone 5 model 1429, running on iOS 7 without UDID (a little buggy but working). The update to iOS 7 itsefl was made on the other computer without a problem. When I tried to sync my apps and music with my iTunes library on my computer, the sync process has stopped on “Determinig apps to sync” (without an error). Any advice would be appreciated, thx.

My son upgraded to ios 7 with no problem. I tried and after going through the whole process I had a message on my phone that said something to the effect I needed a developer account to proceed. So I had no phone over the weekend because I had to sign up to be a developer (which is about a 24 hour process and cost $99. Finally I got it working.

I am running iOS 7 DP 3 on my iPhone 5 without dev account, all three updates downloaded from thepiratebay. This is because I wanted to wait for a few beta’s (less bugs)
