Analyst: Apple to launch iPad 5 and Budget iPhone in early September, iPhone 5S in late September, next iPad mini with Retina Display only in early 2014

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a new report to clients claims that production difficulties will push the launch of iPhone 5S to the end of September.

Here are some of the highlights from his report:

iPhone:

  • Ming-Chi Kuo claims that production difficulties will push the launch of iPhone 5S to the end of September.
  • He also expects the device to be available in limited qualities at the time of the launch due to “difficulties among numerous components as well as assembly, as seen with iPhone 5 last year.” He expects undersupply to improve in October or November. iPhone 5S is expected to look similar to the iPhone 5, but come with improved internals. It could also feature a slow-motion camera mode and a fingerprint sensor, which could be the reason for the delay.
  • Kuo says that the cheaper or low-cost iPhone with a plastic body will arrive in early September, before the iPhone 5S as it is easier to produce. He also claims that it will come with some “novel” new features, but hasn’t provided any more details.
  • He expects it to be priced between $450 and $550 without a contract, it is much higher than the $250 to $350 price range we were expecting. It doesn’t make sense as the idea of the budget iPhone was to reduce the entry barrier, which is currently $450 for an unlocked three generation old iPhone 4.
  • He expects production of the cheaper iPhone to cap at 26 million units this year, which is much lower his previous expectations of 30-40 million units.

iPad:

  • He expects Apple to launch the next generation 9.7-inch iPad in early September along with the budget iPhone.
  • He doesn’t expect Apple to refresh the iPad mini this year. However, he predicts that Apple will launch the Retina iPad mini in March/April 2014, which will be powered by the A7 chip and “a flurry of redesigned internal components”. He also talks about a cheaper iPad mini in his report with A5 chip, which we’re assuming will be the current generation iPad mini, which will be offered for a lower price when the Retain iPad mini is launched.

Mac:

  • Not surprisingly, he expects Apple to launch Intel Haswell based MacBook Pros and iMacs later this year. He expects the refreshed iMac to launch at the end of August, and the new Retina MacBook Pros to launch mid-September.

Ming-Chi Kuo has a good track record when it comes to predicting Apple’s product plans. It remains to be seen, which of his predictions for 2013 will be accurate.

    R.I.P Steve Jobs :(

  • Ahsa

Why do i think apples is gone samsung route, make a device, make million variants and do no innovation.
Poor Steve be crying in his Grave. !!

The Apple under Steve would NEVER have made a lesser product simply to appeal to the greater population.

This “budget” iPhone is devastating. Steve wouldn’t have approved of this, he encouraged Apple make the SINGLE best product in the category, and leave it at that. No major variants, nothing cheap or poorly designed. Everything Apple made back then was art. Something that no other company could hope to reproduce.
    This is quite disappointing.
