MG Siegler, general partner at Google Ventures and a columnist for TechCrunch, claims that Apple may launch “some sort of television product” as early as November this year.
He revealed this on the latest episode of John Gruber’s The Talk Show.
He had this to say (at the 1:27:00 mark):
“Not to go into rumor central here but the latest things I’ve heard, that some sort of television product — not necessarily a television screen but something — could be coming as soon as this November. And I think there’s some surprises there about what it could actually be and I don’t know this for sure yet, but there’s been whispers about, so I’m not going to write anything about it, but there’s whispers out there that the interaction with it could be the interesting thing. People have talked about voice, but I think that that might be out the window and there might be some new way to interact with whatever this thing is.”
Ever since an excerpt from Steve Jobs biography revealed that he felt that he had finally cracked integrated Television sets, the chatter about Apple possibly releasing its own branded television sets has got louder.
Apple has been widely rumored to launch an iOS based television set with Siri for extensive voice control rather than the conventional remote control. But Siegler indicates that this new device won’t feature Siri. He claims Apple is working on “some new way to interact with whatever this thing is.”
There have also been rumors that Apple is negotiating with cable operators to use Apple TV-like device as a set-top box for live television and other content.
It will be interesting to see what Apple has in store for us. It looks like we’re indeed going to have a very busy fall.
Any guesses what this television product could be?
