If you’re looking for a go to app to open your email attachments, then there is a new contender. doctape, a German cloud storage and file management startup has just released a new app called doctape Viewer in the App Store that allows you to open as many as 80 file types.
When you use the Open In option for email attachments, and select “Open in Viewer” option, it will launch the app and display the file using doctape’s cloud-based file conversion engine.
It also allows you to open files via Filepicker.io from a number of web services such as Drobox, Facebook, Gmail, Box, Github, Google Drive etc or open the files from your iPhone’s camera roll.
Here’s a look at some of the file types that are supported:
- Adobe PDF files (PDF)
- Microsoft Office files (Word DOC/DOCX, Excel XLS/XLSX, Powerpoint PPT/PPTM/PPTX)
- Libre Office & Open Office files (ODT, ODT, SXW, STW)
- Text-files (RTF, TXT, CSV)
- Audio files (MP3, M4A, AACF, AIFF, WAV, ALAC)
- Video files (MP4, MOV, MPV, M4V, 3GP)
- Image & vector files (JPG, PNG, TIF, BMP, AI, NEF, ARF)
- Adobe Photoshop files (PSD)
doctape Viewer is available for free in the App Store (iTunes link), however you’re limited to only 2 ad-hoc conversions for documents and images not supported by iOS. It is currently available only for the iPhone.
The Pro version is available as an in-app purchase for $0.99, which gives unlimited conversions, ability to import unlimited files and full text search for documents.
Please don’t confuse this app with doctape – files to go app, which is an app for doctape’s cloud storage and file management service. With doctape Viewer, you don’t need to create a service account.
