Walmart is cutting the price of 16GB iPhone 5 to $98 from $129 with a 2-year contract.
With the launch of the next generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5S next month, it doesn’t come as a surprise.
Walmart had slashed the prices of iPhone 4S as well last year few weeks, before the iPhone 5 was unveiled.
Walmart had slashed the price of the 16GB iPhone 5 to $129 back in June, making it the cheapest place to buy an iPhone 5 in the U.S.
It looks like Walmart is expecting other Apple resellers like Best Buy to start offering discounts on iPhone 5 with the imminent launch of the new iPhone, and is trying to preempt the move by slashing the prices even further.
The new prices don’t seem to be live yet, but CNBC reporter confirmed the news on Twitter:

We’re assuming that the discounts will be available at Walmart’s supercenters, or about 3000 stores nationwide.
It makes sense to wait for iPhone 5S to be launched, as Apple is likely to drop the price of iPhone 5 by $100 (or launch iPhone 5C).
