Apple took to the stage today at its lovely Cupertino Campus and used the occasion to announce the iPhone 5c. Traditionally, Apple has discounted last year’s phone model and made that the budget model, but this year cost-conscious consumers will get a brand new model that’ll squeeze in between the top tier iPhone 5s and the older iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 5c will feature the typical iPhone design, with a unibody plastic casing that is available in a variety of colors. The front will be black, while the back and sides will be green, white, blue, pink, or yellow. It’s a hard-coated polycarbonate. On the inside, its hardware matches closely to the original aluminum-backed iPhone 5 with an A6 processor, 4-inch retina display, 8-MP camera, improved Facetime camera. Connectivity options include a wide variety of LTE bands (more LTE bands than any other iPhone or any smartphone in the world), dual-band WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.0. It will ship with iOS 7.
Pricing starts at $99 for the 16 GB model and $199 for the 32 GB, both prices include a two-year customer agreement. Off contract prices come in at a hefty $549 and $649 for the 16Gb and 32GB model, respectively. Apple will also sell companion cases for $29 each. Each case will match the color of the iPhone 5c.
