As spotted by TUAW, Apple has enabled a cool new feature on the 3rd generation Apple TV than allows it to be setup by merely touching it with your iOS 7 device. All you need is Bluetooth, WiFi and a few minutes of your time. This is especially handy if you need to setup your Apple TV and can’t find the remote.
The new feature uses Bluetooth LE and WiFi to transfer the settings on your iPhone to your Apple TV. First, you must turn on Bluetooth on your iOS device and connect it to the same WiFi network as your Apple TV. To setup your Apple TV, all you have to do is touch your iOS device to the top of the Apple TV and then go sit on the couch.
The two devices will communicate and will transfer over the following settings to the Apple TV:
- the Wi-Fi network and password
- the iTunes Store account credentials
- the language and region format preferences
You can remove your iOS device after the initial tap, but you do need to stay within 10 to 15 feet of the Apple TV until configuration is complete.
This Bluetooth LE trick works with both the iPad and iPhone running iOS 7. It does not work with the iPhone 4 or the iPad 2.
