Apple releases iOS 7.0.2 to fix Lock screen passcode bug

Apple has just released iOS 7.0.2 to fix the lock screen vulnerability.

The update is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Here’s what’s new according to the release notes:

  • Fixes bugs that could allow someone to bypass the Lock screen passcode
  • Reintroduces a Greek keyboard option for passcode entry

The update is available OTA and is just 17.2MB in size. Launch the Settings app, and navigate to General > Software Update to download and install the update.

Apple had released iOS 7, and iOS 7.0.1 for iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on Wednesday.

iPhone owner Jose Rodriquez had discovered a security vulnerability in iOS 7, which let anyone bypass the Lock screen passcode and access sensitive information stored in photos, Twitter, email and more.

Follow these instructions to update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 7.0.2 using the firmware file:

  • Download the appropriate iOS firmware file for your device.
  • Connect your iOS device to your computer using an USB cable. Wait for iTunes to open and connect to your device.
  • Click on device button to the left of the iTunes Store button in the top right corner in iTunes.
  • Hold down on the option key (Mac) or the shift key (Windows) and click the “Check for Update” button in the Summary pane. Browse to the .ipsw file you downloaded and select it. Note: Alternatively, you can also try clicking on the “Check for Update” directly without using holding down on the Option key or the Shift key. If the iOS 7.0.2 update is available it will automatically download and update your device to iOS 7.0.2.

  • Do not disconnect your device until the update has finished.
  • If necessary, restore your device from the previous backup and sync with iTunes.

Update 2:

It is safe to update to iOS 7.0.2 only if you’re on iOS 7.0 or iOS 7.0.1. If you’re on iOS 6.x.x or lower, you should avoid updating to iOS 7.0.2. Check this post for more details.

Let us know how it goes in the comments and if you’ve discovered any other changes.

Thanks for the links. The OTA update wasn’t available so downloaded it and installed the update. So far so good.

    • Jay

i Have an iphone 4 but not jailbroken. im currently running 6.1 but want to update to ios 7. thing is the links are for 7.0.2. is it safe for me to download from this site and install the ios via itunes? dont want to jailbreak. just want to ugrade

  • bravesfan33

Would updating to 7.0.2 prevent me from jailbreaking? In otherwords, should I stay on 7.0 and wait, or is it ok to go ahead and update?

    • Gautam

It seems unlikely that Apple has fixed any major vulnerabilities in iOS 7.0.2. However, one of the golden rules of jailbreaking is to always avoid an update until the jailbreak is released.

      • bravesfan33

Yeah I was thinking that since a “public jailbreak” hasnt been released, that Apple wouldn’t have know what to patch to prevent jailbreaking. However, unless its a specific change for my iphone (5), then there really is not a reason to update just to be safe in case they release a jailbreak for 7.0 only. I mean you never know, look what happened with 6.1.2 and 6.1.3.

        • Gautam

Yeah, but Apple doesn’t need a jailbreak to fix vulnerabilities. It’s an ongoing thing for them.

  • Chanel

I just tried to do the update and now it is telling me I have to restore my phone, which I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT TO DO!!! I have a lot of stuff on my phone that I don’t want to lose. What should I do?

    • Gautam

You should use the Check for Update option in iTunes and not the Restore option.

      • Chanel

This appeared when I tried to update

        • tora

Backup with iTunes, then restore & update, then when it’s done, restore the backup.

          • Gautam

No, restore from backup should not be required if you go with the Check for update option.

        • Gautam

Did you try to add a screenshot as it didn’t get attached.

  • barondebxl

Installed the update without any issues.

On another note, I absolute love the browser on the 5s, it’s so freaking fast and intuitive.

    • Matt

for a year until apple decide your phone is old and make it slow…

  • Sebbi

    Want iOS 6.1.3 – 7.0.2 Jailbreak NOW :D xD

  • Prime201

hopefully it fixes the constant phone (iPhone 4s) reboot that I am experiencing. Any one else having this issue after the 7.0 update?

  • Johnny

You can still bypass the passcode with the ios 7.0.2 update, all you have to do is use Siri and search for something on the web like “Microsoft” and click on the web page then click on the home button and it will take it to the home screen and you will have full excess to the phone.

    • koolguy

      thats funny

  • Coco

Anyone having a problem with sound on the 4S after installing ios7. Mine works and stops working randomly

    • Joao Reis

do a restore iphone option, not a normal OTA update. that will solve. use icloud to backup before.
RESTORE iPhone Option and a clean install, then iCoud restores the backup.

  • Stang

This update turned on the bluetooth on both my iphone-4s, and my ipad-2.

    • HackMaster

      Same thing happened to me

    • Jauhari

and you can easily Turn Off it right?

  • Pacomacman

It’s a shame this update doesn’t actually fix anything of any significance. There are so many bugs which I reported on beta 2 still not fixed! I think Apple must have recruited a bunch of collage students to work on iOS7, it’s so bad. I’m spending all my times coding around the bugs. IOS6 just worked, iOS7 is a mess, ask anyone writing software and they will all tell you the same thing. Apple, get your finger out and fix the god damn bugs…

    • Jauhari

Bugs? can you relisted this bugs?

      • Pacomacman

        Your kidding right?

I found 2 new ones today.

        1) Center a UISwitch in a UIView. Centers on iOS6 but offset in iOS7 by the difference in size between old and new styles.

        2) Rotate a UISlider and its positioning is out by 7 pixels. The difference in height between the new UiNavigationBar height 44 and the old 37!

        I’m finding them every day…

  • Clumsy

why does my iphone 4 always rebooting when im downloading the update from itunes.. i forgot my passcode on my iphone and . i dnt have my laptop im just using another computer… how would i fix my iphone :(

    • Dee

Any computer needs to update then restart in order to apply said update. It needs to write over files.

But the real question here is how can you forget your phones passcode? You use it every day….

  • John Bonacci

Just a joke wtf apple. What are you doing to my phone. It’s hard to type, phone is so slow, and most of all my phone looks like a clowns phone. Thanks you friggen idiots. Me jobs passes away and you think this is up to his standards? I bet a buck that he’s rolling in his grave right now. Just unreal to take shortcuts and now we gotta deal with your crap uggggggggggggg

    • Nikhil Pal

If phone is locked double press the home button in lock screen music player will appear there and there you can change the song and also adjust the volume also and if you have “Shake to change the song” option enable it will also work.

    • koolguy

  • Lenti

Why can’t idowngrade my iphone from ios 7.0.2 at 6.1.2 always find aerror 3194 how to fix it

    • Tan Zhi Kai

You cannot downgrade unless you are using an A4-based device(e.g. iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G) If you are using one of them, put your device into pwned DFU and restore from your SHSH blobs

    • Saeed Ghassemzadeh

I know. I wish they made ios 7 for iPod touch 4…
