iphone5s_touchid_hero

If you’ve just got your new iPhone 5s then one of the first things you should do is setup with Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which is one of the major features of the new iPhone.

The Touch ID sensor allows you to unlock the device without a passcode, and also approve purchases from iTune Store, the App Store, and the iBooks Store.

You can configure the Touch ID during the set up initial set up process, however if you decided to set it up later or want to add another fingerprint then we’ve you covered with this guide.

Follow these instructions to set up Touch ID or add a new fingerprint on your new iPhone 5s.

  • Launch the Settings app and navigate to General > Passcode & Fingerprint.

  • Tap on Fingerprints option.

  • Then tap on Add a fingerprint…

  • Place the finger or thumb which you want to add on the Home button. Lift and rest your finger on the Home button repeatedly. You will see that the fingerprint animation on the display fills up with red color as you progress. Move your finger slightly between scans. It should take less than a minute to set it up.

  • After the entire fingerprint animation turns red, it will prompt you to adjust your grip to capture the edges of your fingerprint.

  • Again place your finger on your Home button, this time however, lift and rest the edge of your finger on Home Button repeatedly.

  • After the entire fingerprint animation turns red, it will inform that Touch ID was successfully set up, and this finger can now be used for unlocking your iPhone. Tap on Continue.

  • This will add the finger under Fingerprints. You can follow the same process to add up to 5 fingerprints.

That’s it. You can now use your fingerprint for unlocking your new iPhone 5s. If you want to approve purchases on iTunes Store, the App Store and the iBooks Store using the fingerprint then tap on the iTunes & App Store toggle to turn it on.

Say I wanted to add someone else’s finger print. Would that be possible?

    • Gautam

Good question. I think it should be possible. I will confirm shortly.

      • Patrick Perea

        Thank you.

    • Gautam

As expected, works with someone else’s fingerprint too.

    • Sebastian Rasch

I read an article where someone added the paw pads of his cat. It didn’t work as reliable as with human fingerprints but it did work. Even cats have unique pad prints! ;)

    It doesn’t work!!!

    • twisdit

same here.. my finger print is registered and it said complete but It doesnt work.. still greeted by “slide to unlock” followed by 4 digit pin

      • RealMarcosMiranda

I figured it out. After you’ve recorded the fingerprint(s) lock the iPhone. Then put one of your finger on it and wait a few seconds. If it can’t read it it’ll tell you to reposition your finger. The keypad for your password will always pop up.

        • KG

I did exactly as you said and it does nothing??

          • Gautam

We have a video coming up, hopefully it gives you a better idea.

Take it to an apple or retailer store. They’ll help you out or replace your unit if defective

Took me a minute to figure this out but, if you use the power button to unlock the phone then get to the passcode screen rest your finger on the home button without physically clicking it then it will unlock! Also, this way is more preferred for me however, when the phone is locked physically press down the home button for 1.5 seconds and it will go right to home screen ! :)

      • Novy78

I just set mine up. It works fine. just wake your phone up and place your scanned finger print over the home button for a sceond and it unlocks your phone.

  • bigot

it works.. i already added 3 of my own fingerprints.. will work with others too

  • shari

do i have to have the password on at the same time too? the fingerprint option is shaded when i have the passcode off. when i have the passcode on it asks for my passcode and not my fingerprint

    • Gautam

Yes, you need to set the passcode as a backup, and then add the fingerprint. Once you add the fingerprint, it will start using it.

      • Brendan

How do you set as a backup?!?!!? Its shaded grey for me too…

  • larry

i Got a lifeproof box with the phone, and can’t get the fingerprint to work with it in the case. Anyone figure out a solution

    • Ballbreaker

Yes. Don’t use the life proof box.

  • brandon

I set it up but how do i make it to where it needs it to unlock my phone rather than passcode?

iPhone 5s, fingerprint works for unlock but does not work for iTunes and App store purchases even when enabled. anything i am missing?

    • iTimmy

I had the same Problem, to fix it I had to make sure I signed into home sharing with my Apple ID and Password and then it allowed me to toggle Itunes and Ibooks to be able to use finger print.

    • Gautam

Did you install iOS 7.0.1 update. It fixes Touch ID and iTunes purchasing related issue.

It also looks like the update disables the iTunes and App Store toggle under Fingerprints. So you will have to manually re-enable it. Launch the Settings app and navigate to General > Passcode & Fingerprint > Fingerprints and tap on the iTunes & App Store toggle to enable it.

      • Ballbreaker

It was still turned on post update on my phone but just didn’t work until I turned the toggle off then on again.

  • M.Love

I cant get this to work for me. I have followed all of the directions and I still have to “slide to unlock” and then enter my 4 digit password.

  • Bas

I’ve setup the phone – Touch ID is working great to unlock the phone.

I can’t seem to get it to work for App store / iTunes store purchases. I always get the password dialog. I updated to 7.0.1 that it told me to.

I’ve even restore the phone, restarted, toggled the finger print switches. Has anyone had this issue and how did you fix it?

    Thanks

    • Gautam

It looks like the update disables the iTunes and App Store toggle under Fingerprints. So you will have to manually re-enable it. Launch the Settings app and navigate to General > Passcode & Fingerprint > Fingerprints and tap on the iTunes & App Store toggle to enable it.

      • Bas

I ended up going into settings and reseting all settings. It worked after that.

I suspect that since I restored from the Beta/GM OS there was some crap or bad setting that messed up the app store + scanner.

        • Gautam

Interesting! Thanks for sharing the solution. It will be helpful for others having the issue as well.

  • Danielle Froehling

I’m not able to click the “add a fingerprint” button under the fingerprint settings! “Add a fingerprint…” is grayed out.

    • iphone helper

you need to set a passcode firsy

  • mohammed

after I do this process i still cant use the scanner and still have to put in a passcode to unlock my phone, what am i doing wrong?

  • Sebastian Rasch

Pretty straight forward, this article shouldn’t be necessary! ;)

  • amanda

i dont have the fingerprint part on my iphone 5c help?

    • Neil Savage

The 5C doesn’t come with fingerprint recognition, only the 5S

  • Rod

    Doesn’t work on 4s

    • Gautam

      That’s because 4s doesn’t have a Touch ID sensor :D
