Leaked home button suggests the iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint sensor

Well-known Apple leaker Sonny Dickson posted up several images of a home button allegedly from the iPhone 5S. What makes this leak significant is the presence of some extra hardware on the button cabling, which just may give us our first closeup of the phone’s rumored biometric sensor.

The part is different from the iPhone 5 home button and includes a small square next to the button. MacTrast contacted iFixit and CEO Kyle Wiens said the additional piece is likely the long-rumored fingerprint scanner. Wiens said to MacTrast:

It looks like the home button will still have a physical clicking action to it still like the 4, 4S and 5. The additional square section next the the button is something new and probably suggests a fingerprint sensor given all the rumor wire chatter on how Apple is expected to add that feature. It looks like that part of the cable flips over the button and sits between the clicking action and the plastic button cover.

So I’d say yes, these photos, if legitimate, corroborate the fingerprint rumors

We will have to wait until next weeks big Apple event to find out if this rumor pans out. If it does, any thoughts on how Apple could use a fingerprint sensor, besides the obvious unlocking function?
