Instagram may add private messaging to its photo sharing service

Instagram is known for its photo sharing network that allows you to snap a photo, decorate it with a filter and share it with your friends. The company added video to its service earlier this year, and it may soon add private messaging.

According to a report in GigaOM, Instagram is planning to launch a private messaging feature inside of its photo and video sharing service. This new messaging support could debut in the next update which is slated to arrive before the end of the year. This information comes from a “well-placed” source  that shared these details with the blog. GigaOM contacted Instagram about this rumor, but the spokesperson not surprisingly declined to comment.

This messaging feature will complement the commenting that is already part of the network . It will allow users to connect on a more personal level than what is allowed with public commenting. Will you use private messaging on Instagram or will it just get in the way?

It seems like a logical move. It will be interesting to see how they ultimately integrate Instagram into Facebook.

I do not have Facebook for a reason. Instagram was a creative outlet missing the features that make Facebook so unappealing to me. More and more Instagram is becoming Facebook and it’s a big let down. I am a designer/photographer who enjoys instagram for meeting new designers and photographers. I do not want to be stalked, contacted through personal message or allow people to track me down if I do not want to be. Lame.
