Twitterrific, one of the most popular Twitter clients for iOS has gone free permanently, down from its earlier price of $2.99.
Iconfactory, the developers of Twitterrific, switched to the Freemium revenue model, where the app itself will be free with ads, and users can optionally purchase IAPs for removing ads, enabling push notifications, translating tweets and accessing the “Today View.”
The revenue model change comes as a part of Twitterrific version 5.7, which also increases the timeline capacity to 500 tweets. Users who’ve purchased the app will be able to access all premium features at no extra cost on all their devices. The ads would only be shown to new users of the app.
With Twitter’s restrictions on API tokens for third-party Twitter apps, switching to the freemium model might seem like a strange choice, but by virtue of being one of the first Twitter apps, Twitterrific likely has lots of API tokens still left. Iconfactory hopes that the increased download count and ad impressions would help fund future development of the app.
