How to disable ‘Frequent Locations’ tracking on your iPhone

iPhone Frequent Locations

Following a report this morning in which China called the iPhone’s “Frequent Locations” feature, which was introduced in iOS 7, a “national security concern,” we figured it would be a good idea to provide a guide on how to disable Frequent Locations on iPhone. If you do not want Apple storing a list of locations in which you frequent, including the date, time and address, follow these step-by-step instructions.

Keep in mind that Apple uses the Frequent Locations feature to personalize your experience in the Today view on Notification Center, such as calculating the distance from your home to office. By disabling this feature, or clearing your location history, you will be affecting this functionality on your iPhone.

    Admin,

For clear History tutorial it may be worth mentioning you need frequent locations ON to clear history, then disable it.

    New tutorial should be:

    Step 1: Tap on Settings.

    Step 2: Tap on Privacy.

Step 3: Tap on Location Services.

Step 4: Tap on System Services.

Step 5: Tap on Frequent Locations.

Step 6: Scroll to bottom, Clear History (Optional)

Step 7: Toggle off Frequent Locations.

The feature is enabled by default, so you don’t need to enable it to disable it :)

        How pedantic.

You just went through telling people in your oh-so-crucial “article” how to DISABLE the service. THEN you followed up with instructions on how to clear the history. Think about it: the victims that followed your advice can’t disable history, because they won’t see the option. Why? Well, because YOU TOLD THEM TO DISABLE THE SERVICE FIRST!

You should have instructed them to clear history first, then disable the service.

You failed to do so. Rather than correct your article, you attempted to correct a reader — who, incidentally, was right whilst you were wrong.

        Impressive.

Thanks man, least you spotted what i was trying to say :)

Basically iPhone hacks, you are telling people to disable it.. then clear the history.. but you cant AFTER disabling it, you must ENABLE it again to clear history..

Thanks again A. Partridge for spotting what i was referring too!

Thanks for the feedback. The clearing history section was meant for people who want to keep the feature enabled, as it makes sense only for them. I have updated the post to avoid the confusion.

I really wish this option was disabled by default. Even more invasion of privacy and for two years until now I didn’t see it buried at the bottom of location services. Probably millions of other people failed to see it too. Not cool, Apple.

I’m running 7.1.2 on an iPhone4. There is no entry for ‘Frequent Locations’ under ‘System Services’ in my settings. Could anyone suggest why this may be the case? Perhaps iPhone4 is not capable of supporting this feature?
