Apple seeded beta 4 of iOS 8 earlier today to registered developers of its iOS developer program. Apple unveiled iOS 8 last month with a number of new features like Handoff, custom keyboards, widgets, interactive notifications etc. Here’s what’s new in iOS 8 beta 4.
Bug Reporter: Apple shipped iOS 8 betas with a new Bug Reporter app that let developers easily file bug reports they’ve encountered while using the OS. The app has been removed in beta 4. Here’s what Apple says: “We’ve received wonderful feedback on previous betas via the Bug Reporter app. Thank you! However, this app has been removed in beta 4.”
New Settings Menu: iOS 8 beta 4 adds a new Display and Brightness Settings menu that lets you control brightness, text size and enable or disable auto-brightness and bold text.
HomeKit: There’s a new HomeKit icon for data privacy
Control Center: Control Center features a completely new look in iOS 8 beta 4.
Tips app: Apple has included an all-new Tips app in beta 4. We took a detailed look at the new app in this post.
Messages: Beta 4 adds new options for Messages history.
Keyboard: The Emoji icon in the bottom row of the keyboard is redesigned.
Contacts: In the Mail, Contacts and Calendar menu in Settings, there’s a new option to disable favourites and recents that appear in the multitasking app switcher.
EU Internet: There’s a new option to enable EU Internet under Settings > Cellular. The EU Internet service only applies to Internet and personal hotspot data traffic. (Thanks Juraj Apex Paňák!)
Swipe options: You can now customise the actions for swiping left and right in Mail.
Handoff: There’s a new Settings menu for Handoff and Suggested Apps. From here you can enable or disable Handoff, and also toggle suggested apps on your lock screen based on location.
Live Typing: The Talk-to-Text feature now displays spoken text in real time rather than waiting for the entire message to display the text.
Medical ID: You now have an option to prevent someone from accessing your Medical ID when your iPhone is locked by tapping Emergency. The settings to disable it is available in the Health app via the Medical ID tab. It seems counter productive, but Apple probably had to add it for privacy reasons. Thanks Greg for the tip!
Spotlight Search and Bing web results: You now have the option for Bing web results in Spotlight settings, so you can disable it or change the order in which the Bing results are displayed in Spotlight search. Thanks Juraj for the tip.
Suggested Apps: iOS 8 has a cool new feature that displays app shortcuts for installed apps or App Store suggestions for apps relevant to your current location on the lock screen or in the app switcher. iOS 8 beta 4 includes options that will allow you to enable or disable installed apps or App Store suggestions. Thanks Juraj for the tip!
Safari: There is a minor change the bookmarks icon in Safari.
We’ll keep on updating this post as we find more changes. If you find anything new that hasn’t been mentioned here then please send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or post them in the comments below.
