Let’s count how many times the iPhone 6 has been rumored to feature NFC capabilities in recent months: one, two, three, four, five, six and seven times. But with so many iPhone with NFC rumors failing to materialize in recent years, there is still skepticism as to whether these reports are true. According to sources for Wired, they just might be.
Following months of leaked components and schematics suggesting the iPhone 6 will have an NFC chip, Wired reports that the next iPhone will indeed feature NFC, or near field communication, for mobile payments. The technology will allow Apple to remain competitive with Google Wallet, Isis, Square and other mobile payment providers.
“The company’s next iPhone will feature its own payment platform, sources familiar with the matter told WIRED,” the report reads. “In fact, that platform will be one of the hallmark features of the device when it’s unveiled on September 9. We’re told the solution will involve NFC.”
Apple is in a good position to launch a mobile payment system on iPhone, as the Cupertino-based company has over 800 million credit cards on file through iTunes. The pool of iOS device owners that have yet to link their credit card is even larger, presenting Apple with a huge potential to put a dent into the existing competition.
It remains unclear how Apple will implement NFC on the next-generation iPhone, although it is possible that iBeacons could play a role. If so, the Bluetooth LE-transmitting peripherals, which are in use at several Apple Stores in the United States, could be a focus point of the rumored September 9th media event.
According to Wired, talks between Apple and payment companies have been ramping up in recent months. Apple’s implementation of NFC should be highly secure, with the report suggesting that Touch ID would likely play a role in securing the platform. Passbook could also have some form of integration, as a central hub for tickets and coupons.
The new iPhone 6 has been rumored to feature an ultra-thin design, 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes, improved Touch ID fingerprint scanner and NFC, optical image stabilization, LTE-Advanced, iOS 8 and more. The iPhone 6 is expected to be announced on September 9th and released between September 16th to September 19th.
