The best thing about jailbreaking is the ability to customize the look and feel of your iOS device. You no longer need to be greeted by the boring default look of the iOS. WinterBoard enables you to do just that, by allowing you to download custom themes from Cydia, that can be applied to completely change the look and feel of your iOS device.
The good news is that WinterBoard has now been updated for iOS 8 – iOS 8.1. Though it was possible to use WinterBoard on iOS 8 – iOS 8.1, it was quite buggy. With the release of Winterboard 0.9.3916, things should be a lot more stable.
saurik, founder of Cydia and developer of WinterBoard has provided the following details about the new version:
Version 0.9.3916 has been updated to support some new features of iOS 7 and 8 thanks to help from Surenix, thekirbylover, alexzielenski, coolstar, Matchstic, and JunesiPhone.
To enable, disable, or change the order of themes, see the WinterBoard panel in the Settings app: there is no standalone app as of version 0.9.3916.
Wallpaper (whether png, html, or any of the other crazy formats that I should never have added to WinterBoard) is not currently supported on iOS 7/8 :(.
Saurik has tweeted that the update includes support for theming the content of assets.car files.
WinterBoard 0.9.3916 is now available, with updates for iOS 7 and 8 (for example: new support for theming the contents of Assets.car files).

Here’s the complete change log:
- 8.x: Support @3x Image Hunting
- 8.x: Remove SummerBoard Mode
- 7+8: Theme .car File PNGs (coolstar)
- 7+8: Preferences Icons (JunesiPhone)
- 6.x: Better SharedArtwork Hook
- Better Resource Pathing (Surenix)
- New @3x WinterBoard Icon (Surenix)
- Fix Crash in Bundle Theme Cache
- Remove Standalone Application
- Image Recorder Now Uses Bundles
Unfortunately, WinterBoard isn’t as powerful as it was prior to iOS 7. It allows you to just change the icons, you cannot modify`the look and feel of status bar, dock, lock screen etc, like you could do earlier. You can check out our Themes section to find out some of the top Winterboard themes available on Cydia.
If your favorite theme is not compatible with iOS 8, then check out our post on how to make the theme work on iOS 8 – iOS 8.1, and on your shiny new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
A number of users have reported that the WinterBoard icon is no longer available after installing the update. You should still be able to customize your iOS device using WinterBoard via the Settings app.
Saurik has released WinterBoard 0.9.3917, which fixes some of the bugs reported by users.
WinterBoard 0.9.3917 fixes all issues users reported with 0.9.3916 (except one, which might not be due to WinterBoard; still investigating).
