The Apple Car is a rumor that essentially popped up out of nowhere, and it’s a rumor that just keeps getting fueled.
As such, it’s no surprise that individuals tied to the automotive industry are getting asked questions regarding the rumored vehicle, or even bringing it up themselves. Recently, the former GM CEO, Dan Akerson, had his own comments towards the Apple Car, essentially saying that Apple has no idea what its getting into.
Now, the Mercedes-Benz Chairman Dieter Zetsche has his own thoughts on the rumored automobile, whittling down the rumor that if Apple is indeed making a car, he’s not going to lose any sleep about it. In fact, he compares it to a car company making a smartphone, and noting that if that were the case, Apple wouldn’t be losing any sleep over that scenario, either. In speaking with motoring.com.au:
“If there were a rumour that Mercedes or Daimler planned to start building smartphones then they (Apple) would not be sleepless at night. And the same applies to me.“
Zetsche does note that him saying Apple building a car is anything similar to Mercedes-Benz building a smartphone is only signs of “respect” for the company.
The Apple Car is far from an official product from the Cupertino-based company, but reports have suggested that the project was approved by Tim Cook more than a year ago, and has a team of hundreds working on it. More than that, recently a report suggested that the automobile will be ready for production as early as 2020.
