Apple just released iOS 8.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which in addition to Health app improvements, stability enhancements and bug fixes, also includes support for Apple Watch.
iOS 8.2 also installs a new companion Apple Watch app, which is interesting as it is kind of useless if you don’t have an Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch app will allow users to pair and sync their Apple Watch with the iPhone, and to customize watch settings. It is available only on iPhone 5 or later.
Here’s how it works:
When you launch the Apple Watch app, you get the intro screen, which greets you and prompts you to pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone.
Pairing With iPhone
To start pairing, you need to tap on “Start Pairing”, which takes you to the next screen where you can use the iPhone’s camera to pair with the Apple Watch. You need to hold the Apple Watch up to the Camera, and align the watch’s display with the view finder as you can see below to pair the device.
You also have the option to pair the Apple Watch manually by tapping on “Pair Apple Watch Manually”. This takes you to the next screen, where you can select the Apple Watch from the list of devices. To find out the name of your Apple Watch, you need to tap on the “i” icon on the watch, and then correspondingly select the name from the list.
In addition to the pairing functionality, it also has two tabs “Explore” and “App Store”. The Explore tab includes links to Apple Watch promotional videos.
Installing Apple Watch Apps
The App Store tab will give users quick access to the Apple Watch apps available in the App Store. It should also allow users to install download and install apps on their Apple Watch. The Apple Watch app store isn’t live yet. It currently says “Experience the App Store built just for Apple Watch – coming soon”.
According to the iOS 8.2 release notes, it also includes a new Activity app for viewing fitness data and achievements from Apple Watch, which is installed when the Apple Watch is paired with your iPhone.
The companion iPhone app feels like an advertisement for the Apple Watch, which some users might find annoying as it cannot be deleted.
We will get a lot more information about how the app works when we get our hands on an Apple Watch.
