Back in 2015, Facebook’s new “Reactions” first saw the light of day. Ever since, the social network has been testing and rolling out the feature.
But Facebook is finally announcing its global availability so everyone can get in on the fun. For many users of the social network, the “Like” button hasn’t been enough, and sometimes warrants a strange reaction to a friend’s or family member’s post. Liking one post isn’t the same as liking another, and limited the way people could interact if they might not have the time to leave a full comment.
In many people’s eyes, simply adding a “Dislike” button probably could have done the trick, but Facebook decided to go in a different direction with Reactions. These are five new options that expand the Like button’s functionality in a big way, thanks to emoji. Now users will be able to express things like “wow,” “love,” “sad,” “angry,” and “haha.” The Like button is sticking around, too.
On mobile devices, hold down the Like button and the Reactions will pop up, letting you slide your finger over to the one you want to choose. On a desktop, simply hover over the Like button to get the same pop-up.
“We understand that this is a big change, and want to be thoughtful about rolling this out. For more than a year we have been conducting global research including focus groups and surveys to determine what types of reactions people would want to use most. We also looked at how people are already commenting on posts and the top stickers and emoticons as signals for the types of reactions people are already using to determine which reactions to offer.”
It is indeed a big change, but this should at least make interacting with specific posts a bit easier.
