Claims that Apple will ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack for iPhone 7 have been backed up by a picture that purportedly provides us with an early glimpse at Apple’s new Lightning-compatible EarPods.
The new EarPods look almost identical to those that already ship with Apple devices — the earphones themselves and the inline remote remain unchanged. However, in place of the headphone jack, there is now a Lightning connector.
Assuming they are real, this all but confirms Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7 won’t have a headphone jack. Users will instead have to rely on wireless headphones connected by Bluetooth, or those with Lightning connectors, which will surely become more mainstream.
But it’s hard to tell whether these EarPods are real. Asian manufacturers have been ripping off Apple’s EarPods since the day they launched, so it’s certainly possible some are already making them with Lightning connectors in anticipation of the new iPhone.
It could just as easily be a Photoshop fake, however convincing it appears at first glance.
We’ll have to wait until Apple unveils iPhone 7 this fall for confirmation, then. In the meantime, there’s an iPhone SE and a new iPad to look forward to!
