How to block Political content in Safari on your iPhone and iPad

If you are not tired of the constant political coverage of this year’s presidential nominees, I can make a pretty confident bet that you will be. Whether you are rooting for Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump, the internet can become a battering ram of unrelenting political focus. If you are like me, and would like to take a break for the political nonsense when browsing Safari, you can do so on your iPhone or iPad. All you need to do is install a handy content blocker; and we are going to show you exactly how to do that.

How to block the Political Content in Safari on your iPhone and iPad

Head over to the App Store and download the free app, Politics Filter. This app is a content blocker that filters and blocks political links, websites, and photos in your Safari browser. So, once you have it downloaded we are going to need to do a little setup.

Content Blockers were introduced in iOS 9 and met some groans from the advertising industry, but has mostly gone under the radar since the announcement. You can find the option to enable Content Blockers in Settings -> Safari and you’ll find Content Blockers under the “General” heading.

Enable Politics Filter in the Content Blockers section. If you don’t have any other Content Blockers, it will be the only one listed in there. Once you toggle that on, your political content filter is now ready to rock and rock.

Head over to a site where political content would be prevalent. Here is the main page of the Economist, Before and After Politics Filter was enabled.

Here is a before and after of CNN’s homepage.

You’ll see that links, text, and images have all be removed thanks to Politics Filter. It’s pretty cool, how nicely that clean things up. But of course, when things are so simply set up, there are some weaknesses that will arise.

For obvious political sites like CNN, BBC, The New York Times, and the Economist, Politics filter will do a pretty spot on job. But when you come across sites that mix politics with humor or even sports, the filter can lose some of its accuracy. Also, it you only wanted to block some political content, there is no option for that. Politics Filter completely filters everything political – I mean everything it can find. So, if you really dislike politics, this is the best way to go.
