Mac Sales Still Steady as PC Market Sees Another Decline in Shipments

It seems PC manufacturers can do nothing to stop shipments from declining each and every quarter. But while rival computer manufacturers suffer, Mac sales remained steady during the first quarter of 2016 as Apple shipped 4.6 million units worldwide.

In fact, that’s a slight increase over the 4.5 million shipments Apple saw in Q1 2015, which resulted in a market share increase of 1 percent, up from 6.4 percent last year to 7.1 percent after the first quarter of 2016, according to Gartner.

Asus was the only other computer manufacturer to enjoy growth during this period, with its share rising 1.5 percent. However, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and others all saw their shares fall, with HP taking the biggest hit of -9 percent.

Gartner PC shipments Q1 2016

“The deterioration of local currencies against the U.S. dollar continued to play a major role in PC shipment declines,” explains Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.

Overall, PC shipments declined 9.6 percent over the last 12 months, down from 71.69 million units in Q1 2015 to 64.78 million units in Q1 2016. Apple did well to maintain a steady pace during this period, then, but its market share still has some catching up to do.

Lenovo still leads the PC market with a 19.3 percent share, while HP sits in second place with a 17.6 percent share. Dell follows closely in third with 14.1 percent, while Asus is way back in fourth with 8.3 percent. Apple is currently in fifth with its 7.1 percent.

In the U.S. alone, Apple shipped 1.66 million Macs to grab a 12.7 percent share of the market, landing in fourth place. Lenovo shipped 1.9 million to grab 14.5 percent, HP shipped 3.1 million to grab 23.7 percent, and Dell shipped 3.46 million to grab 26.3 percent.

IDC’s figures, which were also published this week, are slightly different to Gartner’s due to the way in which each firm counts tablets shipments. However, they tell a very similar story, with worldwide PC shipments totalling 60.6 million for an overall decline of 11.5 percent.

But while Gartner ranks Apple in fifth, IDC places the company in fourth, with 4.5 million shipments and a 7.4 percent share of the worldwide PC market. IDC puts Asus in fifth with an estimated 4.4 million shipments.

“IDC’s U.S. shipment estimates are more favorable to Apple, suggesting PC shipments totaling 1.8 million and 13 percent market share for growth of 5.6 percent rather than the slight decline Gartner estimates,” explains MacRumors.

Of course, all these figures are just estimates for now, so we’ll have to wait for Apple to announce its earnings for this quarter to see exactly how well the Mac is faring.
