Facebook Launches Marketplace to Make Buying and Selling Things in Your Neighbourhood Easier

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook today announced the launch of Marketplace, a convenient place where Facebook members can easily sell and buy items with people in their locality. Facebook says that more than 450 million people were visiting buy/sell groups on its site every month, and with this move, the company is making the process simpler for them.

You can quickly access Marketplace by tapping the shop icon located on the bottom tab of the app. The tab will greet you with items that other people near you have posted for sale. You can use the search function to search for a particular item that you want. Items listed for sale are sorted under different categories like Household, Electronics etc. to make finding the items you want easier.

Once you like a product listed in Marketplace, you can tap on its listing to get more details about it including product photos and seller description. From here, you can also message the seller to negotiate a price. Alternatively, you can also save the listing for a later date. You cannot use Facebook to facilitate the payment so just like Craiglist, you will have to talk to the seller to figure out how you want to pay him/her and get the item that you want.

You can also post an item for sale in the Marketplace by clicking its pics, uploading them to Facebook along with their relevant details. All the items posted by you for sale in the Marketplace can be tracked from the Your Items section of the app.

Facebook will be first rolling out Marketplace to these four countries first on both iPhone and Android:

  • US
  • UK
  • Australia
  • New Zealand

The service will only be available for people who are at least 18 years old. Facebook will continue to roll out Marketplace in additional countries and to its desktop website in the coming months.
