If you were hoping for Apple to provide a significant update to its desktop Mac lineup in 2017, prepare to be disappointed. Mark Gurman in his latest report for Bloomberg notes that Apple is preparing for modest updates to the iMac in 2017.
The refresh will see the new iMacs featuring USB-C ports along with faster and more powerful GPUs from AMD. They are likely also going to come with slightly faster processors from Intel, though the report does not cite anything about that. As for the 12-inch MacBook Pro and the MacBook Pro, Apple is only going to refresh them with slightly faster processors that is unlikely to bring any noticeable improvement in daily use.
Mac fans shouldn’t hold their breath for radical new designs in 2017 though. Instead, the company is preparing modest updates: USB-C ports and a new Advanced Micro Devices Inc. graphics processor for the iMac, and minor bumps in processing power for the 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro. Cue the outrage.
Apple is also considering launching a Magic Keyboard with Touch Bar and Touch ID built-in. However, the company will take a final decision on it depending on how popular the features turn out to be among owners of the new MacBook Pro.
Since the report does not mention anything about the Mac Pro, it is likely that we will not see Apple refresh the computer next year as well. At this point, the Mac Pro was last refreshed in 2013 and it is shameful for a company like Apple to continue selling it.
