Back in September, Nintendo made waves by announcing its first major video game entry for mobile devices, an iOS-exclusive in Super Mario Run.
Earlier this month, Mario made his official debut. Recently it was reported that the title was a smash-hit on launch day, with over 10 million downloads and earning over $4 million in revenue on day one. Now, Nintendo has added new content in the form of decorations for the player’s kingdom, and even added a “Friendly Run” mode, where players can challenge their friends list.
Now, Nintendo has officially announced the numbers, a few days out since launch. The company says Super Mario Run has been downloaded more than 40 million times in just four days. That officially breaks the iOS App Store’s record for most downloads over the same stretch of time.
What Nintendo doesn’t articulate is how many people actually bought the game. It’s an initial free download, but after a certain amount of time the game is locked behind a $9.99 purchase. It does say that the title reached the Top 10 highest-grossing harts in 100 countries, though, so it would seem that the title did okay across the board.
