There’s a high probability that if one rumor surfaces for a particular version of an iPhone and it doesn’t end up coming true, it’ll pop up again for the next version.
If you’ll remember, there were plenty of rumors suggesting that Apple would include the Smart Connector (what debuted with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro), and that it would likely be used for wireless charging. At the time that particular rumor swirled around with the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack, but, as we all know by now, only one of those things turned out to be true.
So, here we are with the upcoming iPhone 8, and now The Verifier is reporting that Apple is planning on using the Smart Connector in the upcoming flagship smartphone, and that it will be used with inductive wireless charging. This would be similar to the way that Apple charges the Apple Watch, so it wouldn’t be completely unheard of for an Apple product.
On top of that, the report also indicates the Smart Connector will be used for accessories tied to both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Unfortunately the report doesn’t go into any kind of details, so what that might look like, or what accessories might be used, remains a mystery.
The report also states that Apple’s upcoming new Apple TV hardware, and updates to AirPlay, will somehow play into Apple’s AR/VR future, but, again, details are scant.
We’ve heard this publication suggest other upcoming features in future versions of iOS, including group FaceTime calls coming to iOS 11. Nothing is official just yet, but as far as plausible things are concerned, and how often we’ve heard wireless charging is set to arrive in the iPhone 8, this at least seems possible.
What do you think?
