Talking to sources inside TSMC, Economic Daily News reports that Apple will be integrating the Touch ID scanner into the display of the iPhone 8. The report claims that Apple will be making use of an optical fingerprint sensor that will allow it to embed the scanner directly into the display.
Unlike the existing iPhones, the iPhone 8 is not expected to come with a physical Home button. Instead, Apple is expected to use a virtual home button, with the fingerprint scanner being integrated into the display. Previous reports indicated that Apple had developed its own custom fingerprint solution for the iPhone 8, but its suppliers were facing yield issues while mass producing it. Due to this, the company was reconsidering moving the fingerprint scanner to the rear of the device. Now though, it looks like the yield issues have been resolved with mass production of the component slated to start from July.
The report also claims that the new iPhone 8 will come with an invisible IR sensors at its rear to help aid AR applications. We have heard through multiple reports now that Apple will be debuting new AR features with the iPhone 8 this year. More specifically, the camera app on the handset will come with some AR features integrated into it. The use of IR sensors will allow the camera to track depth and other metrics that should help with the AR features on the device. Apple could also end up integrating some IR sensors into the front of the iPhone 8 and use it to offer some additional biometric authentication like facial or iris recognition.
Surprisingly, Apple will also be adjusting the aspect ratio of the iPhone 8 display to 18.5:9 similar to what Samsung did with the Galaxy S8 this year. The new aspect ratio is better suited for multitasking and also helps display more content on-screen. With the iPhone 8 moving to a bezel-less design at the front, the switch to an 18.5:9 aspect ratio display does make sense. It would also make the handset more compact than its 5.8-inch display size would suggest. It’s likely that we will see Apple use the same 5.8-inch AMOLED panel on the iPhone 8 which Samsung uses on the Galaxy S8 since the latter also comes with a 5.8-inch bezel-less 18.5:9 aspect ratio display.
The iPhone 8 is rumored to come with an all-new glass design featuring a metallic or steel chassis. It will also come with wireless charging, fast wired charging, and a revolutionary 3D selfie camera at the front.
What do you think about Apple switching to an 18.5:9 aspect ratio display on the iPhone 8?
