Apple today launched a huge Apple Pay promotion in China since it first launched its mobile payment service in the country in February 2016. The new promotion lasts from July 18 to 24 and is applicable for all iPhone and Apple Watch owners who use Apple Pay on their device.
The promotion will see users get as much as up to 50 percent discount across retailers who have participated in the promotion. Additionally, users will also be able to earn up to 50 percent more reward points if they pay through their credit card via Apple Pay for their purchases during the promotional period.
Overall, 28 retailers are taking part in the promotion include 7-Elevent, Burger King, Starbucks, Costa Coffee, and Watsons, with 16 other online-only merchants like JD.com, mobike, Qunar.com etc. also taking part in the promotion. 17 different banks are also a part of the promotion and you will have to use their credit card for your Apple Pay transaction to earn 50x reward points. Banks supporting the promotion include Bank of Shanghai, Bank of Beijing, China Construction Bank, and more.
Apple has likely announced this promotion to counter the growth of other digital wallets in China. While Apple Pay is widely supported in China by most retailers, WeChat Pay and Alipay still remain more popular among users due to their ease of users and wider availability across devices. Unlike Apple Pay, WeChat Pay and Alipay rely on scanning a QR code for the transaction to take place which means that they are supported by almost all merchants in China.
You can find the full list of retailers, merchants, and banks which are a part of the promotion over here.
