Some things on the internet don’t always have a long run. Some, on the other hand, have two decades of service under their belt before they finally see their last sunset.
Today, AOL announced that it will be shuttering its instant messenger service for the last time this December. The final date of service is penned in for December 15. According to Michael Albers, communications products Vice President at Oath (the giant company that acquired AOL), AIM served millions of people, and it has seen its time as one of the primary messaging platforms on the planet, but people have discovered new ways to communicate, so it’s time for AIM to take its final bow:
“AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed. As a result we’ve made the decision that we will be discontinuing AIM effective December 15, 2017. We are more excited than ever to continue building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products for users around the world.”
This particular result isn’t too surprising. Back in March of this year, AOL shut off third-party access to AIM altogether, which, at the time, was a pretty big hint that something a bit more permanent was in the works. While it is probably likely that not a lot of people are using AIM anymore, especially with so many people using services like Instagram, Snapchat, and other messaging platforms. But when a giant like AIM announces it will be shutting down permanently, it’s time to pour one out, digitally speaking.
