Instagram has made it possible to live stream content for awhile, but only recently started testing the ability to live stream with a friend at the same time.
Today, Instagram officially announced that it is rolling out a new feature called “Live With a Friend.” The ability is tagged as being a quick way to add a guest to a live stream, and users will be able to quickly add a contact from their Instagram list to spice up a live stream. There is a new dedicated icon on the bottom right of a live stream, which is a pair of smiling faces. Tap that and then select “Add” to invite any of your friends that are currently watching your live stream.
Once the friend joins the live stream, their feed will show up in the bottom half of the screen, so you can see what they’re doing and hearing what they’re saying in real-time along with your live stream.
Guests can choose to leave whenever they want, and the host of the live stream can also boot them out when they see fit, and they can add another friend if they want. The live streams can be saved to Instagram Stories as well, or can be immediately discarded if the host desires.
“Since introducing live video last November, millions of people have used it to connect with friends and followers in an authentic way. Now, you can have even more fun connecting with people in the moment.”
The new feature is available beginning today. A link to download the Instagram app, which is free, is available below.
