While Uber wants to make sure you enjoy the ride when you’re getting from place to place, it should be easy to find that ride to begin with.
And just in time for the holidays, Uber is rolling out a couple changes to help make finding a ride after you’ve summoned it a bit easier. First up, live location sharing. As Uber notes in its announcement today, finding the driver can be difficult in busy locations. So, the company is rolling out the ability to share your location with the driver.
Uber users simply need to turn on the feature within their app, which can be handled by tapping on the gray icon on the bottom right of the display. The icon will turn blue when you are sharing your location with your driver. You can stop sharing your location by tapping the icon again.
In addition to that, Uber is also expanding its beacon feature. With this, you can quickly identify which Uber car is your requested ride, thanks to a specific color that is shown on your smartphone’s display, and with the same color being displayed on the Uber driver’s windshield. This particular feature is being expanded to New York City, San Francisco, and Chicago. It was originally only available in Seattle.
“Beacon, a device that goes on a driver’s windshield to help drivers and riders more quickly connect at night and in crowded areas, is expanding to NYC, SF and Chicago. When matched with a driver with a Beacon, riders can select from an endless number of colors for the Beacon to glow on their driver’s vehicle.”
And, finally, Uber is also making it easier to request a ride for a friend or family member, with a more streamlined “Request for a Guest” feature. There is also in-app gifting, which will make it possible to send Uber credits to those you want.
