At WWDC this year, Apple announced watchOS 4 for the Apple Watch with GymKit framework which allowed the smartwatch to talk to compatible gym equipments. Now, with the release of watchOS 4.1, Apple has finally released GymKit to the public but for now, there’s only one gym in the United States that supports it.
The Life Time Athletic at Sky in New York is the only gym in the United States to support GymKit for now. Even there, only 13 equipments support GymKit including treadmills, stationary bikes etc.
As reported by CNET, the process is very simple. Simply tap your Apple Watch to a compatible gym equipment, accept the prompt on your Apple Watch and you are done. Once paired, the display on the gym equipment will mirror the data being displayed on the Apple Watch like your heart rate, calories burnt and more. On certain devices, this data will be calculated depending on your height, weight and other personal metrics.
You can also pair your Apple Watch after the workout and all your activity data would be automatically synced to your Apple Watch and the Activity app in your iPhone.
GymKit is available for Apple’s Watch users in the United States and Australia. However, for now, there’s only one gym that has GymKit enabled equipments and that’s the Life Time Athletic in New York. The chain does plan on bringing GymKit equipments to its other locations in 2018.
