Snapchat has become one of the world’s most popular apps, and it is one app that has welcomed augmented reality (AR) features for quite a long while now.
And now the company wants to make it easier for people to create AR effects for their Snapchat app. Today, Snap has officially announced lens Studio, a new app for Mac and Windows computers. It will offer new user guides to help build AR effects for Snapchat, and it’s designed for students, creative types, and developers alike to make these efforts as easy as possible.
After you create an effect, Lens Studio will manifest a Snapcode, which you will then be able to use to share the effect in Snapchat for others to use. Scanning the code will unlock the AR effect for general use.
“With the launch of Lens Studio, we’re excited to make Lenses more accessible to creators, and experiences within Snapchat more personal and diverse. We’ve seen how much more fun Geofilters have become since first inviting the community to create their own three years ago — and can’t wait to see what you build with Lens Studio!”
To start, creators will have to live with only “World Lenses” in their portfolio, the effects that take advantage of the rear camera on their device. The front-facing camera filters are not accessible for the general user base yet, even through Lens Studio. That has been gifted to advertisers to start, with seven signing on immediately.
With the inclusion of templates and guides, this means that a lot more people will be able to create effects for Snapchat. There does not appear to be any type of gate here, where Snap will approve of effects or not, so it will be interesting to see if the social network is flooded with effects.
