Rumor: iPhone SE 2 to Feature Rear Glass Panel for Wireless Charging

There have been rumors about Apple releasing a refreshed iPhone SE in the first half of 2018. The original iPhone SE launched two years ago and found its own set of takers due to its small form factor and the sheer amount of power it packs. Now, rumors about the iPhone SE 2 claim that it will come with a glass back similar to the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

The glass back will ensure that the iPhone SE 2 will also feature Qi wireless charging similar to Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup. The existing iPhone SE features an aluminum design with glass panel inserts at the top and bottom. The front design of the handset is expected to be similar to the outgoing model with no major changes. The iPhone SE 2 is unlikely to come with any more visual changes. However, the switch to a glass panel at the rear will help the iPhone SE 2 resemble the iPhone 8 closely and breathe a new sign of life into its aging design.

Internally though, Apple is expected to use more up to date and powerful internals on the iPhone SE 2. Rumor points to the use of an A10 chip which Apple debuted with the iPhone 7 in 2016. Given the small 4-inch screen of the device and its lower resolution, the A10 chip should still be plenty powerful. The handset is expected to be available in 32GB and 128GB storage variants.

The iPhone SE is primarily for people who still want a smartphone with a compact form factor. It also helps Apple compete in the budget segment in smartphone markets like India where price is a huge factor. In India, Apple assembles the iPhone SE locally which allows it to take benefit of certain tax cuts. Due to this, the iPhone SE is the cheapest iPhone Apple sells in the country where it does well in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
