Updated Apple TV Trademark Filing Hints at More Advanced Gaming Capabilities

An updated Apple TV trademark from Apple points to the coming possibly working on making the HDMI streaming box a better gaming machine. The patent was filed under international class 028 which is specifically related to gaming consoles.

The move could mean that Apple is looking to turn the Apple TV into a serious gaming machine. While it might not be as powerful as the PS4 or Xbox One, a beefed-up Apple TV powered by an A11 Bionic chip would still be more powerful than the Nintendo Switch and previous generation consoles. Plus, if Apple is going ahead with its plan of turning the Apple TV into a gaming console, the company is likely targeting casual gamers and not hardcore ones.

Below are the categories covered under the international class 028 under which Apple has filed its updated Apple TV trademark.

“video game consoles; controllers for game consoles; video output games, namely, video output game machines for use with televisions; apparatus for electronic games adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor.”

A trademark filing does not mean that Apple plans to immediately turn the Apple TV into a gaming console. But it does open the possibility of Apple doing something similar down the line. Patently Apple calls it a “significant update that has to be taken seriously.” With the Apple TV 4, Apple did try and turn its HDMI streaming box into a casual gaming console, though the various limitations imposed by the company meant ended up limiting its capabilities.
