Apple Looking at Ditching the Notch with 2019 iPhones

Love it or hate it, the notch is a key part of the iPhone X design. And for good or bad, Android OEMs seem to be trying to copy the notch with their latest devices as well. However, if a new report originating from Korea is to be believed, Apple is actually looking to ditch the notch with its 2019 iPhones.

Apple is seemingly working on a display without the notch for its 2019 iPhones. The company is currently in discussion with the relevant companies that will help Apple implement its new full-screen approach.

“Apple decided to get rid of notch design starting from 2019 models and is having discussions with relevant companies.” said a representative for an industry. “It seems that Apple is planning to implement full-screen that is more complete to its new iPhones.”

The company is seemingly interested in making this move as it wants to further ensure that its iPhones have a full-screen display. The notch might look ugly in photos but most iPhone X owners agree that it completely vanishes from one’s vision while they are using the device. It is only while watching videos that the notch poses an issue as it cuts into the content. Apple will continue to offer Face ID on its 2019 iPhones so it is unclear where the company will move the necessary Face ID components if it does away with the notch. Similar to Xiaomi, Apple could possibly move the earpiece and some other sensors to the very top edge of the device, but that space won’t be sufficient for the Face ID components.

Interestingly, the report also claims that the trio of iPhones that Apple plans to launch in 2018 will have smaller bezels including a smaller notch. This does sound more plausible as Apple can always shrink the Face ID components by a decent margin thereby allowing it to reduce the notch on its 2018 iPhones. There will also be more internal space on the 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch iPhone that Apple plans to release this year thereby allowing the company to make the notch smaller.

Our Take

It will be interesting to see how Apple gets around the problem of placing the Face ID components on its 2019 iPhones if it decides to do away with the notch completely. While it can always place them underneath the display, the tech also needs to be sophisticated enough to work through it which is clearly not the case.

Will you be happy if Apple does away with the notch on its 2019 iPhones?
