If you check the official spec sheet of the iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, and the iPhone 8 Plus, you’d see that their official battery life numbers as quoted by Apple is very similar. The company claims the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 7 Plus last about an hour longer than the iPhone 6s Plus. Then, there’s the iPhone X which Apple claims lasts about 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7 despite coming with a display and battery bigger than any of its Plus handsets.

This means that if you want an iPhone with the best battery life, you should probably buy the iPhone 7/8 Plus and not the iPhone X. To verify the company’s claims, Digital Trends and The Unlockr compared the battery life of the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, and the iPhone 6s Plus to see which one comes out on top.

The test involved streaming a 10-hour Nyan cat video on all devices. To ensure there were no other factors at play, all the phones were set up with the same account, connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and their screen brightness was set to 50 percent. The results were pretty surprising. The iPhone X came out on top despite Apple claiming that its Plus handsets offer better battery life than it for video playback. The handset lasted 9.5 hours, with the iPhone 6s Plus coming in second at 8 hours and 47 minutes.

The iPhone 8 Plus took the third spot and lasted 7 hours and 46 minutes, while the iPhone 7 Plus was just a wee bit behind and lasted 7 hours and 22 minutes. The difference between the iPhone 6s Plus and the iPhone 8 Plus is almost an hour. This indicates that despite Apple’s claims of the iPhone 7/8 Plus offering the same battery life as the 6s Plus, there’s a notable decline in battery life of its newer Plus iPhones.

Our Take

It is important to note that the test in question was not based on real-life use so its numbers are not representative of what you should expect from your iPhone in daily use. The iPhone X did not have to fire its Face ID system during the test which definitely gave it an advantage. It is the difference between the iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 7/8 Plus in the battery comparison test which is more surprising. After all, the iPhone 7 Plus has the biggest battery capacity among all the iPhones tested and yet it finished last in the test.

How satisfied are you with the battery life of your iPhone? Do you think your older iPhone offered better battery life when you had initially purchased it compared to the new model that you are using right now?
