Later this year, Apple is widely expected to three new iPhones, just like last year. But unlike last year, Apple may launch two flagship models this year.
The first 2018 flagship model will be the second-generation iPhone X with the 5.8-inch OLED display, the second one will come with a 6.5-inch OLED display, which has been dubbed iPhone X Plus. Apple is also expected to launch a cheaper 6.1-inch iPhone model which could come with an MLCD+ display technology that was first introduced by LG in its flagship G7 ThinQ smartphone.
According to rumors, the iPhone X Plus is also expected to have come with a bigger battery with 25 percent more battery capacity of 3,400 mAh compared to the iPhone X (2716 mAh).
Even though the battery capacity has increased over the last 10 years, Apple has been shipping iPhones with a 5W power adapter. I was quite disappointed when Apple shipped the $1000 iPhone X which supports fast charging with the tiny 5W power adapter.
So I hope the rumors that Apple will ship the 2018 iPhones with an 18W USB-C power adapter turns out to be true then it would be great for two reasons.
Based on the comprehensive tests carried out by MacRumors, the fastest way to charge an iPhone 8, iPhone X, or iPhone 8 Plus is with a USB-C power adapter with a USB-C to Lightning cable. It is because iPhone X and 8 support fast charging over USB Power Delivery (PD). MacRumors found that with an 18W USB-C power adapter, iPhone X reached a 79 percent charge after one hour. With a 5W charger, the iPhone X only reached a 39 percent charge in that time. Since the 2018 iPhone X Plus will come with an even bigger battery, it would be important that Apple includes an 18W power adapter.
It would mean that Apple will also need to ship the iPhones with USB-C to Lightning cable, which would be great news for new MacBook and MacBook Pro users as they wouldn’t need a dongle. It is a bit ridiculous that a new MacBook or MacBook Pro user needs to buy a dongle to connect or charge their iPhone to a computer. It could also be used to charge the iPad faster.
So let’s hope the rumor turns out to be true and Apple ships the 2018 iPhones with 18W USB-C power adapter. In retrospect, Apple should have bundled the 18W fast charger with the iPhone X as well.
