Instagram Stories can be customized in a variety of different ways, from stock stickers to filters, and now there might be soundtracks, too.
TechCrunch is reporting on Monday that Instagram is building out an idea for “music stickers”, which would effectively add soundtracks to Stories shared on the social platform. The report indicates that there is code within the application hinting at the ability to add these stickers to Stories. It was discovered that Instagram put together a “Search Music” feature along with the ability to add stickers for individual Instagram users and locations.
That ability to search music includes genres, what’s trending, and even moods. It would allow the user to input a “music overlay sticker” in place within their Story, giving it even more flavor.
This actually ties with reports that Facebook has been inking deals with major music labels, too. Those initial reports suggested Facebook was busy building its own music streaming platform, but it could be explicitly tied to this new feature. Of course, it doesn’t rule out Facebook launching its own streaming service.
“Instagram is preparing to let you add music to your Stories, judging by code found inside its Android app. “Music stickers” could let you search for and add a song to your posts, thanks to licensing deals with the major record labels recently struck by Facebook.”
As it stands right now, there is no word on when this feature might see the light of day.
This is one of those features that will have an impact on other apps out there. As noted in the report, the popular app Musical.ly, which is designed to let folks sign along with popular music, may see a hit if this feature picks up within Instagram. It will come down to how the music stickers are implemented, though, so we will have to wait and see how it shakes out.
What do you think of this impending feature?
