Japanese publication Nikkei claims that Apple’s upcoming wireless charging case for the AirPods will also be able to wireless charge any compatible iPhone. The report is light on details on how such a small charging case would be able to wirelessly charge an iPhone.
Apple will be launching a wireless charging case for the AirPods to ensure that once it launches the AirPower charging mat, users are able to wirelessly charge an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the same time. Considering the report is light on details, it is very difficult to believe that the AirPods wirelessly charging case would be able to charge an iPhone 8 or iPhone X as well.
Even if Apple somehow manages to make it possible, the AirPods charging case has a very small battery that is barely going to make any difference on the iPhone’s overall battery life. This definitely makes no sense at all. What does make sense is the possibility of an iPhone charging the AirPods battery case. Considering an iPhone comes with a significantly bigger battery, it could easily charge the AirPods battery case with a limited amount of hit to its battery life. And in turn, this would help in greatly expanding the overall battery life of the AirPods. If that’s the case, it remains to be seen how one could charge the AirPods charging case using an iPhone.
The report cites that the AirPower charging mat is due to be released soon, with the AirPods charging case scheduled for release at the end of this year. However, the latter’s release timeframe can still change. A report from yesterday claimed that Apple is working on an upgraded AirPods model for this year with a new wireless chip and hands-free Siri activation. If anything, we should see Apple release the new AirPods wireless charging case alongside its new pair of AirPods later this year.
