Apple Shows Off the Upcoming Apple Books in iOS 12

Earlier this month, Apple showcased iOS 12 while on stage during this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, which included a brief look at a major change coming to Apple’s digital storefront and reader for books.

If you want to read a book on your iPhone or iPad, and you want to use Apple’s own service, then you’ll need to open the iBooks app. But there is a major change coming down the pipe, with Apple opting to change the name of the app to Apple Books, and also implementing a few key alterations when you open the app. The company showed of a brief look during WWDC’s keynote, but now Apple is previewing the upcoming changes in a more in-depth fashion.

The company has published a quick update by way of its newsroom, confirming the change to iBooks and showing off the important changes that are coming along with the name change to Apple Books later this year. That includes a new Reading Now section, a redesigned library, and more.

“Apple Books will inspire a love of reading — it puts a world of books and audiobooks right at your fingertips, whether you want to dive into your favorite story for a couple of minutes or a few hours,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software & Services. “This is our biggest books redesign ever, and we hope this beautiful app inspires both customers and authors alike.”

The new Reading Now section will show you the books are you are reading or listening to, thanks to audiobook support within the app. There is also a new wishlist called Want To Read, where you’ll be able to collect an easy-to-peruse list of titles you want to pick up at a later date. The new app will also have a dedicated tab for audiobooks, which should make finding them even easier.

“The Book Store tab makes it easy to browse all that Apple Books has to offer, including Top Charts, Staff Picks, Editorial Collections, and Special Offers & Free. The new design lets you swipe between books, and makes discovering something you will love to read intuitive and fun. As you read more books from the Store, you will receive personalized recommendations based on your purchases in For You.”

The new Apple Books arrives with iOS 12 later this year, but no specific launch date has been provided just yet. When it arrives, the new Apple Books Book Store will be available in 51 countries, and free books will be available in 155 countries.
