Sonos Confirms AirPlay 2 Support Arriving for Some Speakers This Summer

AirPlay 2 is finally out in the real world, but, at the time of publication, only Apple’s first smart speaker, the HomePod, officially supports the wireless technology out of the box.

But that will be changing soon. During a separate event to talk about new technology, Sonos officially confirmed that it will be rolling out a software update to add support for Apple’s AirPlay 2 for three of its speakers. Those getting the update are the Sonos One, the Sonos Play:5, and the Sonos Playbase. There isn’t a specific release date to circle on the calendar just yet, but that date may be revealed sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, older speakers with the Sonos brand won’t be getting updated to support AirPlay 2, due to limitations with their processors. However, there is a bit of a loophole here. You can pair those older Sonos speakers with the newer models that do support AirPlay 2. So you could pair a Sonos Play:1 with a Sonos Playbase, for instance, and have AirPlay 2 functionality.

Apple previously confirmed that these Sonos-branded speakers would be getting AirPlay 2 at some point in the future, along with plenty of other speaker options from other companies.

Our Take

It’s good to see Sonos offering up support for AirPlay 2 relatively quickly. After all, this is one of the features that folks have been waiting for. The list of speakers that will support the wireless technology is pretty long, but that doesn’t mean much if they don’t get updated to actually offer the feature any time soon.

Do you own any of these supported Sonos speakers?
