Alongside its refreshed 2018 MacBook Pro lineup, Apple also announced that it will be selling an eGPU on its online store. Simply called the Blackmagic eGPU, Apple worked with Blackmagic — yes, the cinema company — on the product.
While the external housing has been designed by Apple and Blackmagic, the internals is provided by AMD. The eGPU features AMD’s Radeon Pro 580 GPU with 8GB RAM. Apple says that the eGPU is powerful enough to provide up to 2.8x faster performance on the 15-inch MacBook Pro and up to 8x on the 13-inch variant.
Apart from the Radeon Pro 580, the Blackmagic eGPU also features two Thunderbolt 3 ports, four USB 3 ports, and one HDMI 2 port. It is also capable of supplying 85W of power so it can connect, talk, and power your MacBook Pro and an external GPU using a single Thunderbolt 3 cable. More importantly perhaps, its the first eGPU to support the LG 5K UltraFine monitor which Apple recommends for its MacBook Pro users.
Get desktop-class graphics performance on your MacBook Pro with the Blackmagic eGPU. Featuring the Radeon Pro 580 graphics processor, the Blackmagic eGPU is built to make any Mac with Thunderbolt 3 ports a graphics powerhouse. Enjoy supersmooth gaming, accelerate graphics-intensive pro app workflows, and enable VR experiences or content creation. Built-in I/O connections drive a Thunderbolt 3 display, support multiple accessories, and charge your MacBook Pro at the same time.
There’s no word from Apple or Blackmagic if the GPU inside can be upgraded or not. Nonetheless, since the enclosure has been designed with the GPU in mind, it is smaller, quieter, and looks much better than other eGPU enclosures we have seen so far. At $699, its pretty reasonably priced as well.
