With iPhones being particularly popular among consumers, it is no surprise that they are also among the hottest items for thieves. We have frequently heard and seen Apple Stores getting robbed with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of products getting stolen. However, the latest robbery which occurred at the Apple Store in Huntington Station in New York was pretty bizarre.
As the CCTV footage shows, five hooded men entered the Apple Store in New York, roamed around for a couple of minutes and then ripped out around 21 iPhone display units primarily consisting of the iPhone X and iPhone 8 and ran away. Since the Apple Store employees were outnumbered, they did not try to catch any of the thieves while they were fleeing. The incident took place last Friday (July 6) at around 8:20 pm.
It is estimated that the robbers managed to steal iPhones totaling $19,000. Since the CCTV footage does not reveal the faces of the thieves, the Police are offering a reward of up to $5,000 to anyone who provides them with information about the robbery.
What’s interesting is that a similar style of robbery occurred in Fresno, CA the very next day where 4 guys walked into an Apple Store in a mall and after looking around for a minute, grabbed some of the iPhones and iPads on display and ran away. In total, the Police estimate that they managed to steal around $27,000 worth of Apple products.
Since Apple’s display iPhone and Mac units are locked down, it is unlikely that the thieves will be able to sell them in the market. They might be able to fool some unsuspecting customers into buying the device at a low price, but otherwise, these phones are not going to be of much use to them. They can dismantle the phone and sell its parts to various repair shops which would fetch them a slightly more money.
Has an Apple Store near you ever experienced such a brazen robbery?
