Did you know that Microsoft has its own Movie and TV digital store where it sells TV shows and movies? Sadly, the iTunes-like digital storefront has not done that well since the service is only available for Windows and Xbox users.
However, Microsoft is looking to change that as it is reportedly working on a Movies and TV app for iOS and Android. By releasing an app for two of the biggest mobile platforms out there, Microsoft will make it easier for any user who purchases content from its digital storefront to consume it on their smartphone. In turn, Microsoft hopes that the apps will also help increase the popularity of its Movies and TV store.
But it appears Microsoft is now finally working on bringing its Movies & TV service to iOS or Android, according to sources familiar with the matter.
My sources suggest Microsoft is building these apps to give consumers more of a reason to buy content in the Microsoft Store.
Additionally, Microsoft is soon going to announce that it is going to join the Movies Anywhere program. This will allow customers who purchased any kind of digital content from Microsoft’s store to play it back from any other store. Google’s Play Movies and Apple’s iTunes are already a part of the program. This means that if you purchase a movie from the iTunes Store, you can use the Movies Anywhere app to play back that movie in Google Play.
Microsoft is still working on its Movie and TV apps so they are not going to be released anytime soon. Nonetheless, the very fact that Microsoft is working on apps for iOS and Android means that it has no intention of abandoning its digital store for movies and TV shows just now. Oh, and if you want to go the catalog of movies and TV shows offered by Microsoft’s Movies and TV store, make sure to check it out here.
